Is it true that on black friday, purchases are tax free?

No.

I could imagine that some stores woudll use that as a reason to get you in, but in reality the Sales Tax still must be paid. In relaity what they are doing is lowering the price by that 6-8% (or whatever your tax rate is)

Not where I'm from. I know that some cities offer tax-exemption days around the begining of the school year to encourage people to buy. Only certain things are tax-exempt, though: clothing, supplies, computers, anything related to education.

I doubt that any city would offer a tax-free day on Black Friday, considering it's the busiest shopping day of the year.

NO, purchases are tax free ONLY if the store advertises that. All of your purchases will be taxed.

Nope.

No...I never heard of that..........could you imagine the chaos if that day was tax free?! There would literally be riots everywhere..........and the traffic would be horrendous!
Taxes are high here in New Jersey!

Some states with sales taxes declare a 'tax holiday' around the start of the school year. I have never heard of any having a 'tax holiday' the day after Thanksgiving.

Brandon B is wrong. There is no Federal sales tax, so there can be no Federal sales tax holiday.

No. Some states give a no sales tax in August to help parents who are paying for their kids with school supplies. This is for clothing, school notebooks, computers, etc. Some even went as far this year, in my state (VA) as having everything in the store with no sales tax (I am thinking it was a computer store, not mentioning names here). I worked retail a few years ago, at Staples, and no reduction was made from the total purchase paid due to sales taxes on the total. Even those states that do go with a no sales tax in August, usually end up marking up their products prices. Compare this on your own, but I found it to be very true.

No

It depends on what state that you live if there is not sales tax on purchases made.

depends on your location. For New York, Clothing is tax free under $100.

No. There is a Federal Tax Holiday in August for returning to school purposes. That is the only "non-tax" days there are in the year. They will however lower prices just enough to get it at the same price as if there was no tax.
