~♠♥CJ♥♠~ | Is it true that the tax rebates that they are planning to send out in May is not free? |
I heard that whatever money we get with the rebate this year are part of the taxes we are paying for this year. In other words, the rebate checks are basically an advance on your 2009 refund. The only people for whom this really is free are people on low income and those who will not owe any income taxes in 2008.
I know good and well that nothing in life is free, but many people are being led to believe that this money is free. Also, if this is in fact true, then people won't be willing to spend the money which is what they want us to do. They are defeating the whole purpose, in my opinion. I guess that's the government for you.
So who can tell me for sure if this is true or not? Additional Details Forgot to add, when I say "free," I mean free to the taxpayers. |

While the rebate depends on your 2007 income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the proposed plan, in 2008, taxes would be cut from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.
It's like a one time tax cut for 2008, but you get the rebate now instead of waiting to file your 2008 taxes.
One thing taxpayers won't have to worry about is giving back any excess if their 2008 taxes show that the advance this year was actually more than they should have received. The law says the IRS can't recover the extra payment by reducing your 2008 refund or adding to your 2008 tax bill. |

Everyone that fits into the income parameters is getting an advance on a 2008 tax credit...
Basically they are accelerating a tax cut...
You don't have to "pay it back"... If they were not advancing it now, you would get it on your 2008 return. |

That is correct. It is an advance on your 2008 taxes. Next year it will be deducted from your income. |

Every dime the government spends has to come from somewhere.
It is currently being financed by Treasury Bond Holders, but they will have to be repaid somehow. |

This is a really good question. I would rather not get the rebate seeing as how I get far less than $600 back per year. |

Well, it came from the taxes that working people have paid in. The Government is going to have that much money less, plus the expense of mailing it out. And not all tax payers are getting a rebate, and some people who are not tax payers are.
I'm all for people getting money back from the Government, but this isn't going to do what they claim it is. |

No. And we are not being taxed on them. Bush is wanting us to use them to put back in the economy. And that would be to spend it. I think its a great idea. |

What people don' understand is that next year at tax time you will have to pay all that money back. When you file your 2008 taxes they will deduct what rebate amount you got & even make yoy pay the difference if you got mare back than you normally would have gotten. |
