UNFAITHFUL
Is it true that this year they are taking out the stimulus from last year?
I heard that the stimulus they gave last year is being taken out this year with the new taxes?

Recovery Rebate Credit — If you did not qualify or did not receive the maximum amount for the 2008 economic stimulus payment you may be entitled to a recovery rebate credit when you file your 2008 tax return. Review the tax return filing instructions including the recovery rebate credit worksheet. You need to know the amount of the payment you received in 2008, which can be found on your Economic Stimulus Payment Notice (Notice 1378).

Two online tools on IRS.gov are available — the Recovery Rebate Credit Calculator will help taxpayers figure the amount they should claim on their 2008 tax return, and How Much Was My 2008 Stimulus Payment? ( check at https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/IRServlet?app=IRACTC&selectLanguage=en) helps you determine what your stimulus payment was.

No. Boy has this stimulus been confusing. They are just being sure you got the correct amount last year. Some folks are entitled to more this year. Long story.

NO, it is not true, they are actually getting the information about what you recieved last year so that if you did not get the stimulus last year, you still can, if you qualify. This year it would not come in the form of another check though, it would be included in your refund, if you have one...

No, but some software makes it feel like it is. If you would get a larger stimulus check based on 2008 information than you received (based on 2007 information), then you get the extra as a credit on your 2008 return.

However, a lot of software starts by assuming that you got zero last year. That means it tries to give you the whole amount this year. The very last thing you enter is how much you got last year, and voila! it looks like it's subtracting the stimulus from this year's refund. In actuality, it's just NOT giving it to you again.

No, the stimulus payment is not being used to either increase your tax liability or reduce your refund.

However, if you didn't get the correct amount of the stimulus, then you can claim the additional amount that you did not receive.

No, you don't have to pay it back on the tax return. Some people didn't receive the check or got a reduced amount. So they will get the additional amount on their tax return this year.

No, it doesn't affect your 2008 refund, which is whatever it would have been if there had been no stimulus package or checks. The exception is if you didn't qualify last year, but qualify based on your 2008 return, you'd receive the stimulus payment added to your refund.

Unfortunately, many of the tax software designers took a short cut and calculated the stimulus into your refund for 2008 automatically, then have you subtract it back out if you got it last year. This is causing massive confusion among people who think it's being subtracted from their refunds - it's only being subtracted if it shouldn't have been there in the first place this year since you already got it last year.

You might want to review the link below from the IRS.

If you received the whole stimulus last year you were entitled to then you would not receive any more this year. But if you did not receive it all you might qualify to get the remainder this year.

Also if your circumstances changed from last year, example, added a child, then you could get the additional this year you would qualify for.
