Is it true that when I pay tithes at my church, can I recieve all that money back in my tax refund?
I have a statement from my church which states:
"This is to certify that the sum of 500 dollars was to Greater Apolstolic Church by (Me) for the year of (2007) as a tither. these contributions are entitled to exemption from Federal Income tax under provisions of section 501 (C)(3) of the 1954 Internal Revenue Code, to the extent provided in the code.

the above ruling was so stated in letter 440:2-8; EO-EB October 3,1968 by the Internal Revenue Service"..........

Can someone Interpret that better for my understanding?

No, you can't get it back but it is itemized as a charitable dudection.

No, you don't get your $500 refunded from the tax system. IF you itemize, you can deduct it as a charitable contribution - then you'd save some taxes on that, but it wouldn't be the entire amount, it would be the amount times your tax bracket, so if you are in a 15% bracket you'd save $75 on your taxes - the other $425 comes out of your pocket.

If you don't itemize then you get no tax benefit from the contribution.

bostonianinmo
No, it's NOT true at all. That letter entitles you to claim an itemzed deduction for the $500 you donated. Deductions only reduce your taxable income, they are NOT a dollar for dollar credit.

In order to itemize, your total itemized deductions must exceed your standard deduction amount. That's $5,350 for a Single taxpayer in 2007. If your total itemized deductions are less than that amount then you get NO deduction for your donations at all. If your itemized deductions totalled $5,850 including that donation and you were in a 15% tax bracket, the donation would reduce your tax by $75.

It means that you can deduct $500 on Schedule A. This reduces your taxable income and either increases your refund or decreases your tax due, but not by the full $500 of the tithes. If you itemize, depending on your tax bracket, the amount of additional refund or decreased payment would typically be $75-$180. If you do not itemize, then there is no effect.

shiprepairwoman
It is an itemized deduction. If you have mortgage interest, property taxes, state taxes and other itemized deductions that are greater than your standard deduction you reduce your taxable income by the excess.

it should be deductible as a charitable contribution. And no you will not get all the money back - it depends on your tax bracket.

wartz
If you itemize your deductions, you will reduce your tax bill by your marginal tax rate which I'm guessing is 15%.

The rest will go on the books as building up treasures in Heaven.

Elizabeth I
You wont get all that money back put you will get a percentage of it back based on what your tax bracket is.

Mercedes R
You can receive atleast a portion of it but you have to put in the total amount to find out. If your income is too high then it might not make much if any difference.
