scientologyfolife | Is it true that you can claim all your tax back if your under 18 in the uk? |
|

No, this is not true. Everyone in the Uk pays tax on income over £5225 in the current tax year.
Are you on emergency code maybe? If so, you need to ring HMRC (your employer will give you the phone number) and find out what info they need to put you on a cumulative code so that you pay the correct tax. |

Only if you have been taxed under a temporary code and you have paid tax when you should not have done or you may get some back if you have overpaid it. Sorry the Income Tax Club screws us all for money |

no
you start paying tax at 16 if earning over 5500 a year |

Everyone - regardless of age has a Personal Allowance which is the level of income that you can have without paying tax on it i.e. if your income is below that level you can claim tax paid on it.
The level for the current tax year is approx £5225.
There are certain exceptions to this rule i.e. if the income is from shares you cannot claim the tax back or if the income is from cash given to you by your parents and the amount of interest is >£100 the interest is classed as theirs and taxed accordingly. |

The current position is that any child who is resident in the UK is an individual in the eyes of the Revenue. As such he or she can claim the basic personal allowance ( £5225 for 2007/2008 tax year) and then apply starting and basic rate tax levels to determine any tax liability including higher rate of 40% if income is sufficiently high. Parents do have some options available to mitigate tax by creating income or capital gains on assets "owned" by a child. So if an under 18 individual generates income within his or her personal allowance ,then they should be entitled to claim back any tax deducted from work. For those 16 or over whose taxable income is less than their tax allowances ,they are entitled to complete form R85 to register savings accounts to have interest paid 'gross' or with no tax deducted.
