Is it true you can claim VAT back on things for work, like if you buy your own work uniform?

Only if you are registered for VAT.

if you are employed, then no you cant. some professions however do get a job allowance of varying amounts btween about £40 and £100+ for clothes allowance. these tend to be tradesman jobs like carpenters, builders etc... there are others and im sure there is a list on www.hmrc.gov.uk but i cant be arsed to look for it lol.

this basically reduces the tax they pay.

things like a suit for an office job are not allowed to be claimed back in anyway possible unfortunately.

however, as other have mentioned some clothing can be classed as an allowable expense if you are self employed. this tends to be protective clothing such as boiler suits, steel toe cap boots etc.., also branded clothes like t-shirts with business logo are allowed too.

yes you can
but only if you work for yourself
if have your own business
and you are VAT registered
in the UK it benefits you more to register for VAT if you are earning something like
£60.000 or more per year

Snetterton is right but you can claim tax relief on expenses related to you job EX. buying uniforms or washing them.

If you are self employed then you can put uniforms under expenses in your tax return. if you are keeping books (which you should be) make sure you keep the receipts and just put your uniform in. If you are VAT registered you can claim back the VAT when you do your VAT return. you can volunteer for VAT if your turnover is less than £65'000 but once you reach £65'000 turnover a year you have to apply for it by law.

just trying to make a difference

you will only be able to claim VAT back if you yourself are VAT registered, but i doubt you are otherwise you'd know the rules in more depth.
however, you may mean tax - yes you can get a tax allowance for certain things if you are an employee, and if self-employed things like work clothing can be off-set against your earnings to reduce any tax payable.
you should get some professional advice from an accountant or HMRC http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/menus/contactus.shtml

janny
i understand you can claim the whole lot IF there is a company logo (doesn't matter what size or where it is) that would make the item unwearable outside work e.g. polo shirt plain...can't claim. polo shirt with embroidered shop/business name..can claim the whole expence.try the inland revenues link below
