Is it true you can claim your pet dog/cat on your income tax?

redvelvetflames4ever
Only for business or a disability (i.e., blind)

cwald888
Not as a personal or dependent exemption. However, about the only way you can deduct your pet dog is if the dog is also your security guard dog for your business and is at your business location 24/7. The main reason you have the dog must be for use in the business.

There are some circumstances in which an animal may be taken as a deduction but you included the word pet and that would pretty much exclude that particular animal.

No.

SG Elite
No you can't.

If your dog is a show dog, or a breeding dog, and you have a business around showing or breeding, perhaps.

Judy1
As a dependent? If you can get a social security number for your pet, you could give it a shot. Of course, you might end up in jail......

More seriously, if your business (for profit) is showing dogs or cats, then there are expenses that you could claim.
