Is it worth paying someone to do your taxes.?
Me and some of my coworkers were talking about taxes today. And they were telling me that its better to pay someone to do your taxes because they will find out everything you can get money for. But I was like why pay someone to do them when I can go to a place and get them done for free. And they said that even if you pay someone to do them you still get more out of it and you can write it off on the next years tax.

Sometimes it's worth it. It depends mostly on how complex your taxes are.

If nobody makes a mistake, on a reasonably straightforward return any preparer will come up with the same numbers - there aren't a lot of gray areas there.

If you itemize, yes you can write the cost off on next year's return - but that doesn't mean you get all your money back. For example, if you pay $100 to get your return done, and are in the 15% bracket, then next year you'll save $15 on your taxes if you itemize - if you don't itemize, you get NO benefit.

The worth depends on your circumstances, so only you will be able to answer for sure.

I can say that in my experience, having my taxes done professionally has been worth it. My accountant usually lowers my tax bill (legally) more than the fee he charges me. This is compared to a return prepared using TurboTax.

I'm sure the TurboTax people wouldn't be happy to hear me say that, and I'll make it clear that my personal circumstances probably don't reflect anyone else's.

It depends on the person really, if you CAN itemize, you can add a bunch of little stuff, like paying someone to do your return, but if you don't have stocks, mortgages, business expenses and such. If you are a simpleton, go to a VITA center near you, they are free and trained by the IRS.

Sometimes people that file themselves miss out on a few things... It's like insurance.. Willing to pay someone to do your taxes even though you might not get anything out of it... Really your call. They might save you $100 and charge you $80 to do it.. So it really saved you $20. Who's knows.

Also you can write off what you paid a tax preparer...

I charge an average of $35... If I can't beat turbo tax I have to join them!

I think the simplier ones do not warrant a professional. They are simple enough to figure out on your own. However, as the complexity increases, you may want to consider getting help. For one thing, is your time worth doing all the research and reading and figuring what you can and cannot do. Professionals do keep up on what is going on and will save you time and money.

I am a professional (EA) and have suggested to many of out clients that they could do this on their own. Most of them prefer to not to be bothered with it for the small fee involved.

I didn't/don't know if you can write it off on the next years taxes...but my returns are a few hundred dollars more than when I do it on turbo tax when I hire an accountant. They do it for a living and know the rules better than anyone. I am very satisfied paying to get them done myself.

If your single ,the answer is no.The only time you really come out better is if your married,or have a lot of deductions. It is really very simple ,and you can't get any more by having someone else doing them.

turkus07
get turbo tax for $35 and do it on your computer
