WhiteHouse Watching | Is it wrong to ask "wealthy" people to pay more in taxes % than the average person? |
Asking the wealthy to pay more in taxes is unfair. You are probably richer than someone you know, should you pay more taxes than they do? Why cant it be a flat tax? A percentage is fair. If you make more you pay more but not a higher percentage. |

It is wrong to ask people to pay different amounts. It's illegal, immoral and harms the economy.
Bob F, it's real humanitarian of you to want to make sure we ALL get hosed instead of singling anyone out.
quizzard123, Everyplace in all of time that has made its tax system more "progressive" has seen harm to its economy follow. This happens every time, everywhere without a single exception ever. The poor are always hit the hardest, again, without exception, ever. This is what Democrats mean by "fair." The few places that have made their systems flatter have all (again, no exceptions) seen economic boom lifting people across all classes. Democrats hate this because "the rich" are included in the benefit.
colanth, seek out and find a fact. Flat taxes always lead to better economies. You just said, in effect, that if you take away fewer of the baker's supplies, he can make fewer pies. If you struggled with all of your might to be any wronger, you would certainly fail. |

I am all for cranking up taxes on the poor. Make the poor pay much more. They are the dregs of society that drain our resources. Just crank up their tax rates, make bread and water free to the public, and be done with it. That way, we productive members of socieity can do our thing. |

We are all wealthier than some and poorer than others. I pay a higher %age than others I know who don't have as much. And I don't have a problem with paying more than people who aren't as blessed as I am. Sure, I put myself through school to get a good job and they could have too, but they didn't. So until they strike it big, I don't mind helping to carry a fellow human who hasn't had it as good.
In other words, I am all for a progressive tax system (%age increases with income) even though it hoses me as much as it hoses most. |

Doing it your way is what causes a depression. Is it fair to cause a depression? (That's when the wealthy stop making more millions and the middle class stop eating.) |

They already do!
Why will they continue to try and grow their money, thus creating jobs, if they just have to hand more over to Uncle Sam?
Ireland is the only THRIVING European Economy and GUESS WHAT? They CUT their taxes on the businesses and "rich". What a concept.
If a "wealthy" person owns a company, the company pays taxes AND they pay personal taxes. They pay taxes on equipment, employees, inventory, sales, expenses, phones, electricity, heat, gasoline, insurance, on and on and on.
EVERY TIME IN HISTORY, WHEN A COUNTRY RAISES TAXES ON THE "RICH", THE REST OF US LOSE OUR JOBS.
Do you realize that the bottom 50% of wage "earners" in the US, DON'T PAY INCOME TAX? AND if they have a bunch of kids, we GIFT them MORE money. For nothing. How many jobs do they create? How much of the tax bill do they pay?
Jeesh, tell you what, let's just do everything in our power to ruin what little is left in Amercia.
F' it, we don't want the jobs, we don't want to pay our bills and we want mommy/daddy government to take care of us.
We are going to get exactly what we deserve. |

A so called 'progressive' tax system is logical and fair. Poor people spend their entire income on supplying their basic needs, and have no excess to pay tax. Richer people, on the other hand, have much higher disposable income percentages, and can afford the extra tax much more easily.
Those who espouse a flat tax are almost entirely richer people. Since we can assume that any taxpayer will want to push for the system that benefits themselves the most, what does that tell us about the flat tax?
I make well above average income, don't use any unusual tax dodges, and therefore pay more than my share of tax. I find that totally acceptable.
Lyle: first of all, I was not suggesting tax rates be raised further. I was suggesting that the current system works. Raising taxes is almost always bad. But you make some rather sweeping claims there. Can you substantiate your claims that it has NEVER (no exceptions, in all of time!?!)helped an economy to make the tax system more progressive? I don't think you can. Can you supply concrete examples of where a flatter tax system per se has specifically helped an economy? |

Why do people buy in to this nonsense? It's supposed to be a graduated system. It's a good idea. A person earning 25K/yr and pays 10%. A person earning 250K pays 10%? Guess whose life is impacted the most.
Besides, it just doesn't work that way in practice. Warren Buffet is one of the richest people in the world and," Mr Buffet said that he was taxed at 17.7 per cent on the $46 million he made last year, without trying to avoid paying higher taxes, while his secretary, who earned $60,000, was taxed at 30 per cent." Right out of the mouth of some body who actually knows what he's talking about. The article (link below) goes on with an economic plan that recommends the 25% top income earners pay a flat rate of 18%.What about the other 75%? Zero. Does that sound fair? No? Fine, then let's all pay 18%, fine by me.
I won't reword the article here, but it makes it very clear and id advocated by somebody who knows a little something about making money.
I'm not crying over the tax bills of super wealthy people because I understand they have multiple ways to avoid paying even a single cent in taxes. I'd rather side with some one who proves the point rather then listen to the BS coming from the people trying to keep every penny they have. |

They are already doing this. the more money you make, the higher taxes is..
Its wrong cuz they worked for there money, just like the other guy. so it should be just one percentage.
its very unfair. so vote for Obama to support that and raise taxes even more for the wealthy. McCain is against this. so vote for him if you think its unfair.
