Is my daughter liable for (UK) tax on the maintenance income she receives from her ex husband?
At the moment she receives spousal and child maintenance but soon will only receive child maintenance.

This depends on your law.
Generally, alimony is tax deductible for the person paying the alimony and taxable to the person receiving the alimony. Alimony is taxable, child support is not. So if you have a choice, take the child support. Of course, you may need both. If that's the case, make sure the alimony and child support aren't rolled into one monthly payment called "family support." If they are, you may end up paying unnecessary taxes on the entire amount.

In UK, Assessments under the Child Support Act 1991 can only be made on or after 5 April 1993.
Since the payments fall under the New Rules they will not be taxable on the deemed recipient as his or her income

if she is a uk citizen, then yes. call 0800 300 3900, tax credit helpline, if her income is below 50000 (excluding maintenance-non taxable) then she will be eligible, if her income is below 12000 then she will be entitled to work tax credit and ctc. also if she isnt already getting it child benefit 0845 302 1444, say her income is less than 14000.00 she should be looking an extra £40.00 per week, if its less than 12000 she will be looking bout £60.00 per week, and if its under 50000 about £10.00 per week

No, maintenance received is not taxable in the UK>

Wally
Time to get married again.

xron
no because that income will already have been taxed when her ex earnt it.

Johnny
I don't think so - it has already been taxed at source (the ex husband) it shouldn't be taxed twice.

JD
Check witht einland revenue and customs, do you mean child benefits? They usually tax it before you recieve it anyhow.
