Is paying Social Security taxes mandatory or optional?

its most definately mandatory.

Jeff
LOL.

Taxes aren't optional, including the SS tax.

Wish they were, but they aren't.

oakhill
Although most jobs require payment of social security taxes, many do not. Some state and local government employees, including many teachers, are not covered by social security and do not pay the tax.
So, in one sense, paying social security taxes is optional - depending on which job you choose.

Kay
Yes it comes out of everyones paycheck. Otherwise IRS will come after you!!!

raysmithson1
sorry to say they got you there......mucho mandatory

Unless you are employed in a job that is not covered by Social Security--teachers are the biggest ones now--or a self empployed minister or Amish that opted out, it is mandatory.

It's still mandatory, but if McCain wins, expect the Republicans to consider GW Bush's ideas about private investment of your funds. I don't know the Democrats response to the issue...

Gary
It is mandatory, we do not have a choice.

J.V.
100% mandatory

"So you COULD not pay, but you, of course, run the risk of the penalties associated with doing so."

That's because it's mandatory.

awakend_one
Well, it is and it isn't... I can tell you that it is definitely ENFORCED. So you COULD not pay, but you, of course, run the risk of the penalties associated with doing so. However, the government and agencies like the IRS want you to forget that this country was built on the principle that the government is to serve the people, not vice-versa. So, in reality we, the people, are the one's with the power, NOT the government. American citizens have the right to assembly, the right to protest the government. IF every single American united today and decided to no longer pay taxes. What would the government do? ..... Imprison all of its citizens and allow the economy to collapse on itself? .... I think not. They would be FORCED to reform. Will this happen? .... No. Sadly, most people are too afraid of the government to ever exercise their right to oppose it.

Yes you have to pay SS. But it is also funny how people are complaining about taxes being so high when they are at the lowest point umm EVER! This government and this nation was funded on taxes and fee's not on political unity and belief in freedom and liberty. Also the government will not jail you for not paying your taxes BUT if u lie on your tax return that's a different story =/
