Is redeeming bottle deposits of $2,000 at one time considered income? Will I have to file as income?
I have over $2,000 worth of empty cans I plan to redeem for 10 cent deposit in MI. Once I turn them into the distribution center, will I be forced to fill out a tax form and claim this as income?

Are these your own personal use empties or did you collect them for recycling?

If they are your own, you owe no tax and the deposit is a return of part of your purchase price.

If you collected them for recycling, you are a self-employed recycler and will need to account for the income of $2,000 using Schedule C. You can subtract the costs of collecting and submitting these recyclables for income.

The IRS has a lot of data on this and recognizes that there is a lot of tax evasion in the recycling industry both from the recyclers and the centers. The recycling center may give you a 1099 and report your payment to the IRS.

No because you are getting the money back you paid as deposit on these bottles when you paid for them. You aren't getting any money extra from what you already paid. It's done as an incentive so that you return your bottles for recycling. You have already paid what you are getting back.

Serge M
If you paid the deposit when you bought the full bottles, there is no income; you are simply getting your deposit back. If you collected the bottles and did not pay the deposit, you worked to earn the deposit and therefore will have income. Whether it is taxable depends on your other sources and amounts of income.

You may be asked to fill out a form, but no one can force you to fill out a tax return. If the law requires the distribution center to pay some of the money to the IRS, you can claim it as tax paid on your next income tax return.

I don't know about filling out the form in Michigan, but the IRS will sure as heck consider it income. If you find a lost quarter in the street, under their rules, you're supposed to DECLARE that as income.

If you do have to declare it in Michigan, consider what you do to be a business and see about filing a Schedule C with your federal income taxes. Then you can write off the car that you leased to go out and collect the cans, the truck that you used to haul them to the distribution center, rent on the place you stored them before taking them to the center, etc. Before you know it, you'll have lost money on the business. .... Poor you, all that work and nothing to show for it. BUT that's business...

Jonathan
I truly doubt the recycling company will send you a 1099-MISC for the exchange. If they have not, I would not report the income being that the income was not from a hobby or business. Now if you plan to do this on a regular basis, other tax treatment can and probably will apply.

turn them in little at a time..I know you dont have too claim it due you dont get a w2 form..but that amount not sure with the redemption place..As long as you dont give out your social security number your fine

ChicagoMan
Yes, Gross income all income unless specifically excluded. Now there might be some adjustment or deduction for recycling out there, but I've never heard of it.
