donna r | Is she my dependent...or does she claim herself? |
My daughter was a full time student last year till she graduated whom I supported. Once she graduated she was employed full time, and moved on her own in August. I claimed her as a dependent on my taxes, is she able to claim herself also? |

she lived with you and you supported her more then 6 months, you are allowed to claim her.
only one person can claim an exemption. You supported her so even if you didnt claim her, she wouldnt legally be able to claim herself |

No, she can't claim herself for this year. But since she isn't living with you any more, next year you won't be able to claim her, and she'll claim herself. |

I think you have to pick one or the other. I think that there is a line like, "provided more than half her support" or some such percentage. It's tricky with college expenses but since college is expensive and first jobs pay poorly, I would bet that you paid more than half of her expenses last year. |

NO, she can not..... when she complete the form 1040 be sure not to mark the box 6a. That would let the IRS know that she was already claimed by somebody else. |

If you claimed her, she can't claim herself. |

Unfortuantely if you have claimed her she wouldn't be able to claim herself for the same year. Of course I preface any financial advice by saying you want to talk to certified tax preparer for the state you are living in to see if there's loophole or alternative. |

No. She qualifies (and you filed) as your dependent for the 2007 tax year so she loses her own $3400 exemption. |

Only one of you can claim the exemption for her. If you've already claimed her, she can't claim herself. If she tries, you'll both get notified by the IRS that the same person has been claimed twice, and the one who is most entitled to claim her (and I'm pretty sure that would be her, herself) will be allowed to.
If she doesn't have a problem with you claiming her, then just have her do her taxes but state that yes, she has been claimed as an exemption on someone else's taxes. That's all she needs to do. |
