aynalemtiku | Is spousal support tax deductible? |
|
|

T J
 |
Alimony yes, child support no (well, technically it depends on your filing status).
If you're paying alimony it is deductible. The spouse gets that portion of your salary, and is responsible for paying taxes on it. You get to deduct it. I have to pay alimony and although it's a pain, every year I get a nice refund back from the IRS.
On edit: the distinction between alimony and child support is important. Alimony is a sharing of income, child support is supporting a child you created. There are no deductions for child support other than what you would normally get as a parent. Alimony, on the other hand, is a transfer of income. |

yes - that's considered alimony - the recipient must claim it as income - just make sure it is clearly described as spousal support and not child support or the IRS will burn you |
|

Deb S

Yes it is. The person receiving has to list it as income & the one giving gets a deduction if filing long form. |

Yes. |

Are you still married? Then, no deduction. If you are not married but are making payments of alimony, that is deductible as described in several of the answers here.
Alimony paid is an adjustment to income, Line 31a of Form 1040 for 2007. |
