If you mean the current level of taxation and what that is on, then no .. cant be. If tax in general, then yes, in theory it could be good, if it was 100% transparent to everyone as to where that money was helping the citizens of that country.

But then what can you expect from a Government that tries to set (then climb down on) various tax and budgetary requirements, without even knowing how many people are in the country !!! Madness. I mean, hardly a good example of a well run bank account are they .. what are we at now, something like £43 Billion in debt as a country ? .. Should anyone with that kind of overdraft be trusted, let alone be allowed to set taxes against its people to cover the debt it incurred through incompetant management ? Any person in a job now knows that we would be out of that job if any of us ran our business so poorly.

So .. in short, aye, Tax is fine if completely transparent as for it's reason and it's requirement ethically. Sadly, firstly politicians need to understand social ethics, which may never happen.

Boris the Oval Banana
Agree with Brian.
Everyone needs to contribute to the ambulances, police, national security (no that isn't fair either as it is - yes it is as a concept), roads, infrastructure, etc etc...

Essentially, loopholes need to be closed, and the superwealthy need to ask themselves...
..."If I have 13 million, what will I use the extra 8 million I got from my tax-dodges for, if not helping others and society? What will my spouse do with a ninth Lamborghini?"

Their retort will likely be - "the money is not spent correctly," and they have a point, except for the fact that the poor can't afford the legal support to get their own tax-dodges, which means the government has to raise the taxes for the poor to compensate.
Which means that the super-wealthy who "avoid" (or evade) taxes, and vote or lobby to keep doing so, are directly responsible for hurting the poor and middle class.

I think income tax is a fair concept, unfairly implemented. I think sales tax is a fair concept, unreasonably implemented.
I think property tax is unfair in both concept and implementation because property is paid for with taxed income, and should be subject to sales tax if required. Paying forever on something you already bought outright is clearly immoral.

It`s true that Mr Citizen must pay taxes to pay for many things he uses or enjoys ------

On the surface it sometimes seems to most of us we can pay upwards of £1000 council tax, just to get our wheely bins emptied (especially if we don`t use most of the other services)...old infirm people who now can`t even ever get out of the house, still pay these taxes.

Personally I think taxes are too high because the government wastes taxpayer`s money. And I think they waste it cos they don`t have to work long hours to earn it - it`s much easier to waste money someone else have slaved for.
Many people these days work long hours and sweat blood for a decent wage - they have to watch every penny, and are more careful with their own money than the government is.

I dont know why people get so anoyed at paying tax. The first thing you do when you have an accident or are ill is phone for a doctor or ambulance. When your house is on fire or your being robbed you get on the phone and ask for help. Should this be Free or maybe we could start charging like the americans where paramedics check your wallet before your pulse.

Civil & National Defence, Roads, Public Travel, Civic Amenities, Waste disposal, and a whole lot more comes from taxes.

If politians would pi** off and stop ripping us off our taxes could be lower and if we broght all our armed forces back this too would lower our tax.

So In short tax is fair the amount we are taxed is not fair

Including every tax thats taxable. I.E car tax paid for by your earnings thats already been taxed,Fuel,Fags,Booze, Council, V.A.T ECT,ECT,ECT. according to the econimists, Britain stands at 63% of all earnings in britain goes in a tax of some sort. The worlds worst example.
Tax is fair, But not if you live in the uk.

There is no such thing as a fair tax.

Fairness is actually irrelevant - it implies a value judgement.

Tax is merely a mechanism by which we have our money taken off us by the state to pay for the things the state decides is important.

In democracies the value judgement as to 'fairness' is made at the ballot box - deciding whose value system should decide the extent to which money is taken off us.

The police/ambulance argument is largely irrelevant - because we cant pick and choose the detail of government expenditure (pro/anti nuclear, pro/anti road expansion, pro/anti Iraq war etc.).

The UK Government seems to have a favourite saying at the moment, which is that everyone should pay their 'fair share' of tax.

I disagree.

Apart from the fact that 'fair' is a highly subjective notion that should have little place in law, I feel that it is iniquitous that someone who has a vested interest in taking the money from us should decide what is fair! This is legalised mugging, with the mugger saying that you should be grateful because they are giving you their personal and undivided attention.

When you look at the amount of money the UK Government extorts from the public without them knowing, I think you will agree that the level of UK taxation is already beyond a joke, and that if the Government wants to talk about 'fair' it should be reducing the tax burden, not increasing it.

As this is unlikely, it is only right and proper that you should act to preserve your hard earned income.

Darth Cynic
The idea of tax in general is a good idea.

The way it is being ran currently is not, how could it be when large corporations get special tax breaks. The well heeled have a plethora of loop holes to evade paying money they would not even notice missing. All while the general populace get taxed, shafted and hunted to the ground should you fail to pay.

Yes, because social services like government and police work and infastructure are necessary to our quality of life.

there are different types of tax, some being fair, some not being fair.

Progressive tax- Taxes go up as you make more money. Somewhat unfair. While the amount of money gives them more disposable income to give to taxes, they should not be punished for earning more money.

Flat tax- Every pays the same tax rate. Fair

Regressive tax- The less money you make, the more you get taxed. Unfair. It is harder to get ahead through investment, education, and other things that money allows you to do. Therefore, you get stuck in a lower class.

No it is extortion - demanding money with menaces.

I don't like the 'states' one size fits all monopoly services - many are lower quality than I want (and I cannot 'top-up'); and many are higher quality than I need (so wasting money).

If the money was not stolen from the public, then the public could make the choices that suit them.

Instead we are lumbered with unresponsive, inappropriate, half baked state organisations that equate failure with more money - so are effectively paid to be bad.

lol! no!

because o tax, I am unable to work, I am too ill to work full time but want to work and can work but onky part time. I did this for 5 months before I realised that because of all the tax I had to pay, I was actually £100 worse off then if I were on benefits! (I live in London and have alot of council tax to pay) it meant that I was expected to live off (after rent and tax) £8 a week for everything from travel to work, to food and electricity. I was in a catch 22, most people can claim working tax creditd, I wasnt working enough hours to do that, but I was earning "too much" to get help from the state.

So no, tax is not air, and by default I am unemployed and back on voluntary work.

Read your bible and see what Jesus thought of tax gatherers.. But then again who would pay for the water we use , and er wait a minute, we pay for them, to all those silly people who bought shares when Milk Snatcher sold the utilities off. We dont pay the nurses and doctors and hospitals though, not directly anyway, but lifes a ***** and then you marry one.
