Cindy | Is the 'Make Work Pay' tax credit apart of the $8000 tax credit or separate? |
I just purchased a home May 2010 for $220K. I'm single and filed my taxes in Feb and received a small refund. I'm in the process of filling out the 1040x form but whenever I get to the bottom to see how much will be refunded to me, I'm always $400 shy of $8k. I do know that I did receive the 'Make Work Pay' credit for $400 which makes me wonder if this is the reason why I'm shy of $8k. Could someone please help me out?
I always thought, as long as your home purchase was more than $80k than you'll be eligible for the $8000 credit and not $7600. |

Yes "make work credit" is different from home buyer credit. If your home is worth more than $80000 your credit for home buyer is $8000. |

1040X is only supposed to be for changes to what you already filed. So the make work pay credit you already got should not even enter into the picture. If you did your taxes properly earlier, the 1040X should only be for the $8000 credit. |

totally different credits based on totally different reasons
the $400 make work essentially results in an increase in the amount of income tax withheld--ie if you actually had $1000 withheld, this figure would now be $1400 |

There is an income limit on the $8000, after which it begins to phase out. You could be making a mistake, or you could be right near the limit. |

They are two separate credits.
You made a mistake on the 1040X. The bottom line should be $8000. |

The two credits are completely separate and you should qualify for both of them.
It sounds like you're forgetting to claim the Making Work pay credit on your amended return. |

It is separate. You might be completing the form wrong. On line 14, you need to check both the box for Schedule M and the box for Form 5405 and enter the total of all credits that are from any of the forms listed on line 14. In your case, you would enter $8400 on line 14 of Form 1040X. (You probably forget to include the $400 and entered only $8000. That would cause your problem.) The reason that you enter $8400 is that you have $400 from the Schedule M (Making work pay credit) and $8000 from the Form 5405 (first time homebuyer credit). |
