Star | Is the 800 per person tax credit a for sure thing? |
or is it still just being talked about? I'm a little confused on what this would mean. Hypothetically, if you got 300 back in taxes normally, would this mean you would get a check for 1,100 this year? Additional Details Well thats nice. The people who don't have money wont even benefit from it. How nice of him. |

If the rebate proposel goes through, they said it would be for individuals and families (married filing jointly) and that you would get the money regardless of whether you paid taxes last year out of your earned income or not. A lot of people are bringing their taxable income down to zero and getting earned income credit and other child tax credits, and that is totally wrong what Judy said about you only getting the $800 IF you paid $800 in taxes! If your earned income as a single was at least $8000 and for married $1600, then you would get 10% back......$800 single and $1600 married filing jointly households.
Here's an article that discusses more of it in a paragraph near the end: http://money.cnn.com/2008/01/18/news/economy/rebate_how_it_works/?postversion=2008011913
In 2001 when they did the rebates and sent out all those checks in the mail, it was not based on how much taxes you paid and determined by that.
By the way, they said it would take several months to get everything done to get the checks printed out and sent, so we would probably not see a check until June at the earliest if the proposel goes through. So, I would not count on getting extra money "attached" to your regular refund back at all! Not a bad idea but they will not do it that way! |

No, it's a PROPOSAL, not anything that has been passed by Congress or is a done deal.
Even if congress passes it exactly as proposed, it wouldn't come with your refund check, it would probably come sometime this summer at the earliest.
And the way it was proposed, it would bee $800 per person only if you paid that much in tax. It's a rebate, which means you'd only get at most the amount you actually paid in tax. |

I read the article linked in the previous answer, and I do not agree with the interpretation of the previous answer.
The article makes it clear that whether the rebate is refundable or not has not been decided.
The article states that an initial proposal is to eliminate the 10% tax bracket. This does not mean that if you earned $8,000 you get $800. It means that if your taxable income (after you have deducted your standard or itemized deductions and exemptions) is in the 10% bracket, you get the tax you paid rebated to you. In this proposal, no one in the 0% tax bracket would get any rebate. |

It is still in the talking stages. Bush should have not said one word about it in the first place. Some people have all ready spent their rebates and they even have not received it. |

It has also been said that the amount will depend on your income level vs the poverty limits. So, if you're like most americans that are stuck in the middle class bracket, oh well for us. |

First off, why do you think you should be given money you never paid. If you only paid 500 dollars in "federal" taxes (not all of your taxes combind) why should you be give more than 500 dollars back. Secondly why is it Bush's fault that the media jumped all over this story. Even more importantly, why is it bush's fault that a person assumed they would be getting 800 dollars, then went and spent it only to find out that they were never getting it. That is foolish money management. There is no point in counting on something like this untill the money is in our bank. |

Why do they get our hopes up!! Now I'm going to be all bummed out when we don't get any rebates. |

way to go, lets stimulate the economy in 5 months great ******* plan, you idiots ....cant you see the rich are not struggling and the poor always will unless they get on american idol or become a famous actor
800 bucks would help but its chump change, its not like americans are gonna benefit from this maybe a living room or two with huge flat televisions because thats all people give a *** about... so we can watch bush dwindle off into the distance while we see hilary being sworn before this october its all bullshit ,,, just have fun work and love your family
peace |

The only thing that is for sure is that the rich will get richer as long as Chimpy Bush is in office. |

This is just being discussed at this time. We really don't know what they are going to do.
If it is done the way the last one was done, it will be figured by what your refund was last year, and then it will be deducted from what you would receive next year.
Some tax break huh? Take it out of this hand and put it in the other. |
