Whether its fair or not depends on whethr you are getting reasonable council services. With the details of the council tax you get a booklet that explains where the money goes. Look at all of the services and you decide if you think they are important. Take waste disposal for example-very very important but undervalued. The only time its unfair is when other people try not to pay. It is not fair to make the "rich" pay a lot more-why should they pay more for the same services as someone else? Sometimes the amount is not fair when you judge it alongside your neighbours but if you are getting good services then they have to be paid for. If you are not-then complain about the services."Rich " people-ie in big houses get little more than you do as the services they use are much the same. However-they pay a lot more than £23 a week.They also have big mortgages to compare to big council tax bills and you wouldnt like their bills either. |

if you use any other service you pay for it, so surely everyone who uses it should pay for it.
if my whole village catches a bus we all pay.
oh yes they tried that, it was called the poll tax and everyone bitched about it because all the scrounging 18 year olds still living with mummy and daddy had to pay as well. (or mummy and daddy had to pay for them). |

Of course it's not fair. It's marginally better than the poll tax it replaced but as most of local spending comes from central government and you all voted for MrsThatcher to cut taxes, there isn't the money available any longer, except by hitting us all, rich and poor. |

Mine's £23 a week too! I think you could be right! But doesn't most of that pay the wages of the police and fire brigade? And will they just go on strike if they get the pay rises they want in the years to come? Who knows mate! Peace to you. |
