Is the IRS not a government entity are they a business? Do they file taxes? If they do who checks them?

Additional Details
In ref to travelin 25: as they generate no income in and of themselves. Then if they generate no income what are penalties and interest?

The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury. They do not pay taxes, as they generate no income in and of themselves. The IRS is organized to carry out the responsibilities of the secretary of the Treasury under section 7801 of the Internal Revenue Code. Consequently the IRS is accountable to the Department of Treasury, and can be audited by that branch of the goverment. The individual who has direct authority over the IRS, and thus direct ability to hold the agency accountable is the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. The office of commissioner was created in 1862 by the Revenue Act of 1862, as passed by congress.

The IRS is also subject to oversight by Congress, which can request records documenting their operational expenditures, as it can any agency that is funded by appropriations of congress.

The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury.

The IRS is organized to carry out the responsibilities of the secretary of the Treasury under section 7801 of the Internal Revenue Code. The secretary has full authority to administer and enforce the internal revenue laws and has the power to create an agency to enforce these laws. The IRS was created based on this legislative grant.

The IRS is part of government. They do not file or pay taxes, as they would just be paying themselves their own money.

Actually, the Internal Revenue Service is a TAX COLLECTING agency authorized by the Department of the Treasury, and by Congress. Also, IRS MUST show how much money was collected and where was it spent.

Billy J
It is a government entity.

The internal revenue service is a part of the united states department of the treasury. It is the tax collecting part of the federal government.

To neil K: you do realize that you are arguing for the elimination of the only progressive part of the income tax system and further, you are in favor of a completely regressive tax system. Why not just say that anyone making more than $XXX doesn't have to pay taxes & everyone else has to shoulder the rest.

Of course they are an entity of the US government. If you mean taxes on their income, as a corporation would pay, then no, they do not pay taxes. They do pay payroll taxes on wages to their employees. They don't pay property taxes on the real estate they own, but they do pay (indirectly) taxes on property they rent. They do not pay sales tax on things they buy.

As there is no Law on record saying that we have to pay Income Tax, only Capital Gain tax, I would say that the employees of the I.R.S do not pay taxes. I would guess that I.R.S. the coorperation would have to pay a Capital gain tax

Those are all good questions.
I believe in the ELIMINATION of the income tax system. And rather use a "re-adjusted SALES TAX SYSTEM"(not to much different than today's system) AND a Property TAX system.

So basically take away the one major form of taxation and work with the other two.
