Sir Singleton
Is there a way to uh, not, do taxes?
I personally couldn't care if the government owes me money.

If you don't owe taxes you can opt not to file. As I understand it, the April deadline is for people who owe taxes. Since you don't owe money, even should the IRS audit you the worst case scenario is that you would have to show that you paid your full tax burden through payroll deductions. The same, of course, is true for the state comptroller's office.

However, if it is determined that you owed taxes you will open yourself up to lots of fines and possibly imprisonment.

I do question your comment that you don't care if the government owes you money. While I find your altruism commendable, you might change your mind. Over the years, that tax money adds up.

Okay - to sum up - you don't need to file if you're owed money. However, you should keep your tax records (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) for at least 10 years so you can defend yourself if you're audited.

I should point out that I am not an expert; I'm regurgitating information I heard in the past. So, if you get into trouble don't come running to me. I think, at the very least, you should file a 1040EZ. This will stave off charges of income tax evasion and open up the opportunity to file amended returns in the future so you can get the full refunds you might be due.

Move to Mexico, its a tax free country. Poor but free.
I lived there some years ago and property taxes are very very cheap
like 100 dls a year for homes, only very high high incomes get to do
report some tax, but the rest of the citizens are free.

The only solution is to move out of this country. But then you have to contend with national systems, like the UKs NHS which will take more of your money anyway.

everything appears to promise that it will last;
but in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes."

The only way to uh... not "do taxes" is to die.

But then again, even then, if you have an estate or some money to pass on, the government is still gonna get their share.

So the answer's no.

stephaniej2888
Sure dont do your taxes, then you will end up either owing the government a LOT of money or Jail time in the future.......You have to do your taxes weather they owe you money or you owe them money its the law!

BobApril
Sure! Don't make income.

Other than that, no. You are legally obligated to file if you make more than a certain rather small amount over the year.

bjsrls5
You may not care if you do not get money back, but if you do not do your taxes it will catch up with you. You do not want to do jail time or have fines. So I think that the best thing to do is to file your taxes.

flying_fling
Yes. Don't do them. It's easy especially if you're self-employed. Just don't submit the necessary docs. Of course, this doesn't go without consequences.

rtfm
If you mean you're entitled to a refund, then legally, yes, you are still supposed to file a tax return -- but realistically, there is a vanishingly small percentage of a chance that the IRS will ever come after you to make you do it.

And as an American citizen, I thank you for your voluntary donation to our country!

If there's no possible way you'd owe any taxes, you don't have to file.

The income tax is unconstitutional. Most definitely.
