My boyfriend and I have been living together for about a year now and he has not been working. Is there any way to claim him on my taxes. I know this is often a hard subject to deal with tax wise because he and I are not married. Does anyone know or have any place I can go to for detailed information? |

You can fils as head of household and claim him as a dependant...when you get your tax form for this year...look at the descriptions of the different filing status's. Look specifically for the head of household information and that should tell you everything you need to know. |

In order for a non-relative to qualify as a dependent, the person must be a member of your household for the entire year (from January 1 through December 31). You still would need to meet the support test (at least 50% of his support). If you can meet those two requirements, then you can claim him as a dependent. If you were to marry, then you cannot claim him as a dependent and you would be filing married filing joint. |

Step one GET RID OF THE FREELOADING BUM!!! Step two, check if your state recognizes common law relationships. Then check in with any of the tax refund/preparation outfits for more info. |

Jseah gives a good answer, but do not forget about the requirement that your relationship must not violate local law. Here in NC, such a relationship would be illegal (unless you have separate bedrooms and do not...well you can probably work out the rest). Consequently, you could not claim him in NC. You may be able to do so in other states. You would need to know your state's laws regarding people living together outside marriage. |

Anytime you provide over 50% of the care for someone, you can claim them as a dependent on your taxes. However, the rules for claiming head of household are a lot more complicated, and usually if this person is not related to you, such as a child, you cannot claim them. See a tax professional to clarify this point. |

Why is he not working? YOU are working and paying the bills while he is sitting on your furniture, eating your food, talking on your phone, showering with your water...WHY???? This man is a freeloader and a user.
This is why I divorced my first husband. |
