It all depends on where you live.. in CA or FL, no, but if you live in Kansas, then you are probably doing very well at a $40k salary per year.
I live in CA where home prices and the cost of living is high. With gas prices and the cost of commuting (if you commute) then you are living paycheck to paycheck on $40k and definitely wouldn't be able to afford a mortgage on your own. |

It depends on what profession, where you live, and what your schedule is like (i.e. what the hourly equivalent would be). Also what other benefits are included in the job. My salary is a little lower than i would like, but the company is paying for my MBA and our health insurance is low out of pocket cost to the employees. |

If you are in less urban areas and are just starting out in the work force, I would say this is a decent salary. If you are going to work somewhere like S.F., L.A. or N.Y. etc. then you may not be able to get by too comfortably |

It depends where you are. In NYC or LA, you probably wouldn't be able to survive. In much of the South, you would be known as the "rich guy". |
