Is this fair if a couple with a child makes 19,000 a year they are eligible for...?
Food stamp medicate section 8
Food stamp=3500 a year
Medicate=3500 (what other insurances charge)
Section 8=10,000
and if the same couple would make 36,000 a year they wouldn't be eligible all of the above and at the end of the year those who make 19,000 WILL GET BACK ALL THE TAXES THEY PAID PLUS EARNED INCOME CREDIT (2500)
while those working hard will not get back anything and wont get the earned income credit
IS THIS FAIR?
Additional Details
J P you raise a good point but why are they getting earned income credit
and my point is that a man making 12$
an hour would not want to work more than 30 a week so he will be eligible for all the programs

This is what the democrates have done to our country- It's called "entitlements" & it's not fair to anyone! It makes victims out of the poor & sucks those of us who do work dry.

By the way a couple with a child making $36,000 would probably get most of their taxes back and earned income credit . Just not as much.

First, there's nothing fair about the tax system in the US. Second, there's a big difference between the actual dollar value of the services you listed and having the equivalent dollars. Those services are highly (depending upon perspective) limited in what they provide, whereas equal dollars can be used for any goods and services you want to purchase. Third, while the earned income limit for married filing jointly with one child is just under $36k, most people "making $36k per year" have a much lower taxable income.

If you want fair, tell the US government to go to a strictly sales tax (you only pay tax on goods you actually use) or go to a fixed percentage income tax and remove sales tax. Otherwise there is no "fair" solution to the tax problem because either the rich pay the majority of the bill or the poor suffer because they can't as easily pay for the different taxes and as a result have a much higher percentage of their actual income going to some tax or another.

Our tax system is set up on the principle that taxes get paid by people who can afford to pay them. "Fair" is in each person's opinion, so no way to say what's really "fair". But life isn't necessarily fair.

of course not, it's our government

Well, let's turn the clock back a bit over 40 years and see what's REALLY been going on.

In 1966 the minimum wage was $1.40 per hour and you could actually support a family of 4 on it. Nothing fancy of course but you got by. You had full Blue Cross/Blue Shield medical insurance through your work and paid virtually nothing for medical care -- the co-pays on delivering a child were about $20 or so and there weren't any on prescription drugs.

Fast forward to 2008. The Federal minimum wage is less than $6.00 an hour -- and the politicians are actually PROUD that they got it pushed through. However adjusted for inflation it should be closer to $15 an hour.

Hmmm... If the minimum wage had kept pace with inflation there wouldn't be an EIC and only the poorest of the poor would be on foodstamps, Medicaid or Section 8 housing. We'd still have BC/BS health coverage -- which was a hell of a lot closer to "universal healthcare" than whatever may come out of the next administration, if anything at all comes out.

So, what happened? Well, it USED to be that business took care of their employees and the governmnet ensured that a liveable minimum wage was guaranteed for everyone. But then business got greedy and convinced the politicians that unfettered free enterprise would be better. BC/BS became the catch-all coverage for folks in poor health. A reasonable minimum wage became history. Reasonable retirement plans were chucked for putting the onus on the employee to invest on their own (with less disposable income no less) and Social Security grew into a monster that is now buckling at its knees.

The right wing pushed for "minimal government" and got it. Sort of. But now the government has to help and step in when firms like Wal-Mart use Medicaid as their "healthcare plan" for their lowest-paid employees. Gotta pay that bill somehow, right?

3 people living on 19,000 a year? That's about $365/week before taxes are taken out..... You try living on that & see what assistance you go looking for.

What isn't fair is the single moms who don't marry the dad's ( yet they still live together) & get free medical cards, food stamps, housing, etc.

No its not fair but thats life

sure it is - you're talking about double the income - 19,000 for a family of 3 is poverty
