Is this water meter bill normal? In the UK?
We just had our water meter bill for 6 MONTHS. It is £274. We are 2 adults who are out all day.
We shower instead of bath. No kids. Just a normal semi. No swimming pool.
Additional Details
There are no water leaks. I checked. The meter reading does not alter over 1 hour with no taps on.

It seems a little on the high side, but not abnormally so. There are many reasons that it could be a but higher than you expect.

Although showers are promoted as more water efficient than baths, many people spend quite a long time in the shower, and some power showers actually jet out a lot of water.

Do you do a lot of washing up? If you run a full bowl just to wash up a few breakfast bowls, then the same again in the evening, and at lunchtimes over the weekend it will all add up.

Similarly for flushing the loo. Most modern toilets have a dual flush to use less water if its not needed (ie no number 2!!). If you don't have this or don't use it you might be using a lot of water.

Do you have a garden that is watered everyday with a hosepipe? Or do you wash the car the same way?

Do you leave the tap running while you wash your face or brush your teeth? Try doing the same thing with the plug in and you will be surprised how much water is being wasted.

You have checked for major leaks, and if you had one of those your bill would probably be much, much higher. But you might have a simple dripping tap. The water meter measures cubic metres of water, which is a lot, so a dripping tap might not register a change on the meter in an hour. But over the course of a week or a month it can add up to a lot of extra water. I once inadvertently left the plug in a sink that had a very slow drip. In an afternoon it filled the sink and the splash of each drip put so much water onto the floor it looked like someone had emptied the bath onto the bathroom floor! This isn't counting what must have gone down the overflow pipe.

On top of all of this you might just have expensive water prices in your area.

It you are West from Bristol that is about right. The SW has the highest water bills in the UK.

turkystick
That sounds alot of money as we pay £190 for 6 months and we are not on a meter. There is 4 of us and we have a bayth everyday.

anon
I'd check this out with your council that seems a little high. Good Luck

The bills for water vary enormously across the Country, You don't say where you live, but if it is the South West then you have the highest water bills in the entire UK. Apparently it is because of the length of coastline we have ???
It sounds about the same as mine, with similar circumstances. Agreed it's a rip-off, but we have no alternative supplier for water.

Hermia
Depending on where you live that could be right. I live in the South West and my last bill was £110 for three months. I live on my own in a tiny studio flat. I am out most of the time, always take a (non-power) shower rather than a bath and don't own a washing machine. So, £274 for two people living in a bigger property could be right.

Back to the drawing board
If you still have doubts there's some information in the link about further ways you can check that your meter is working properly:
