Is unemployment compensation taxable by the IRS?

renchick13
yes unemployment is taxable. Most states now have it set up to have taxes deducted from unemployment check instead of paying it when you file your taxes.

jinenglish68
Yes. With regard to what joonbug posted, you can't deduct those expenses against your unemployment compensation directly - they can only be deducted as a miscellaneous itemized deduction subject to the 2% of AGI floor on your Schedule A.

Yep. Should've had it done when collected.

Joonbug
Yes, it is. You can also deduct expenses such as the cost of printing resumes, cell phone bills to prospective employers, commuting costs, etc. Because when the State sends you the unemployment checks, they report it to the IRS.

S T of India
It should not, because I feel the amount cannot be beyond taxable slab of taxation. But it depends on the country.
