geo1872 | Its said smokers cost the NHS 1.5 billion a year. How much do they pay in duty on cigarettes each year? |
Do smokers pay more into the government coffers than they take out? Most of the price of a packet of cigarettes is duty so I would like to know the figures if anyone out there knows. Also waht would happen if people stopped smoking, drinking and driving? These three actions are widely slated by different groups but by my reckoning swell the treasury coffers by much more than they cost. We would be bankrupt in a week if it all came to a sudden end. |

Smokers finance most of the NHS, far more than take out of it! Given that smokers normally die younger than non smokers, they are actually less of a burden than non smokers who live longer, and whose bodies wear out and need constant medical help to keep going.
What people don't realise with all this anti smoking propaganda that around now, is that when smoking is banned in public places, yes a lot of people will give up, but the money needs to be replaced from somewhere. Wheres it going to come from? Taxes!
Currently smokers are heavily taxed on their cigarettes, but when lots of people give up, everyone is going to have to pay extra taxes to make up the money lost!
I think that alcohol should be banned next, its only fair! Alcohol negatively affects a huge number of people who don't drink, who suffer at the hands of drunk people. Its costs the NHS a fortune, patching up people who've fought or damaged themselves when drunk, and also costs the police a fortune. |

i asked a simular question. and someone told me:
'the cost to the NHS to treat all smoking related disorders is 1.5 billion per annum, Far outweighing this is the 3 billion pound the NHS pays out to treat all eating related disorders' |

could and do pay for nhs 15 times over. |

If everyone stopped smoking, drinking and driving, it would make no difference to our salary whatsoever... we would just be taxed a lot more on everything else. |

i did know the figures i forget them exactly now but the income made from taxing cigarettes far outweighs any cost to the nhs. if they dont wanna treat smokers on the nhs fair enough but dont charge us tax on our cigarettes, with the money we save we could get private health insurance not catch mrsa and have money left over. |

In my case as a 20 a day smoker (40+ years) it's £1,460 a year now!
I've also worked for 40+ years and paid National Insurance which currently costs me £416
I've cost the NHS a little bit over the years but not because of my smoking, and nowhere near what other non-smokers I know have cost! I'll no doubt cost them more in the next few years but it's likely to be old age related. If it is related to my smoking it still won't cost anywhere near what I've already paid by being one!
I don't drink so no tax there, but no cost to the NHS either. I do drive a diesel powered small car but I don't know exactly what the tax is or how it's used! I've been paying it over 20 years though! I've never needed treatment in that time or injured anyone else (Thank goodness) so again no cost to the NHS.
The government have to be seen to 'encourage' us to look after ourselves but guess what > It's a big con!
If we all gave up all three the unemployment figures would cripple the government! How many hands does your pint go through? Who built the car you drive?
Where do you think the lost revenue from people who either cut down or quit smoking due to the ban will come from? My money is on food! It's well known that smoking is an appetite depressant. |
