baniiziquay49 | Iwas wondering ihad my childs last name changed will this effectmy tax refundor will there be a delay with it? |
|

It could cause a delay. The IRS matches the names of dependents as well as taxpayers and spouses against social security records. If the name on the return doesn't match the name on the person's social security card you will get a letter from the irs and they will try to disallow the exemption for that person. To avoid any problems, use the name exactly as it appears on the social security card even if that name is no longer the correct legal name. This goes for women who marry and take their husband's last name but forget to change their social security cards as well. |

The IRS compares names & SS #'s with the Social Security Administration's database. As long as you notified the SSA of the name change, there should not be a delay.
If you didn't notify the SSA, you should fill out the form on the link below.

Agree...use the name exactly as it appears on the SS card. You should notify the SS Administration & see if you can get an updated card to prevent problems for your child later in life (with what they pay in for SS). But until you get it changed with SS Admin., use the name on the card on your tax return. |

Legally, changing names make no difference for tax purposes. As others have noted, if the name on the return does not match the social security records if could cause a delay. |

Don't wait. Make an appointment with your local Social Security Office. Take birth certificate and legal papers pertaining to the name change so that the name and social security number match. They have to match when the IRS processes your return or there will be no refund. |

As long as you notify the Social Security Administration of your child's name change, you should be okay. |

Call a Tax Attorney if it does or just make sure you get your child's new birth certificate and social security card with the new name when reporting taxes; I'd suggest you make a call to your Tax Attorney! |
