Just curious!! I have a friend that has only worked 1 month at a job making about $8.00hr then got fired.?
She hasn't worked anywhere else before or after. We live in PA----Now that tax times coming she's bragging about that she'll get about $7000 to 8000 back from taxes because she got 3 kids and is single...is this true? It kind of shocked me that she only worked 1 month out of the year and she'll get all this money back...why is it so much????
Additional Details
She gets food stamps every month from welfare and she lives in one of her sisters houses for free.

This is not true. However, she should get all of the taxes she paid refunded, which may be 300-400.

she is not getting any thing back.
she is getting a hand out from our pockets to 'help' her out of poverty.
unfortunatly don't think it works in most cases.

sassy_pants12901
Yes its true she will get money back, but not as much as she thinks. Now your only allowed to claim up to two kids, which i think is a great idea, because alot of people were just having kids to get the child credit...

Rick B
no. that is not true. She is delusional.

IF SHE FILES, SHE WOULD PROBABLY GET EVERYTHING SHE PAID INTO HER FED. TAXES. SHE WOULD ALSO GET AN EARNED INCOME CREDIT FOR HER CHILDREN. IF SHE HAD TO PAY FOR DAY CARE SHE COULD PROBABLY GET MOST OF THAT BACK TOO.

She will get back some but won't get back as much as she thinks.
She will get back all that was withheld from her check. She will get back a refundable part of the Child Tax Credit(probably less than $1000) and she will get Earned Income Credit but not the max. To get the max you need to earn about $11,000. Since she only made about $1200 she will get maybe $300-$400.
She is certainly getting back more than she put into it but should not come anywhere near the figure she thinks.

stephenweinstein
She's probably wrong. Either
a) She miscomputed a credit (probably EIC).
b) She has taxable income confused with tax. If you take the amount she earned and subject the amounts that are not taxed (exemptions, deductions, etc.), the result is negative. However, this amount is not refunded.
c) Although this was her only job, she had a large amount of taxes withheld from other income (interest, unemployment compensation, dividends, real estate sales, etc.).
d) You are wrong about this being her only job or about how much she made.

She gets back only the total of
1) anything that was withheld for income tax (assuming that her income tax is zero, which is likely)
2) any refundable credits (EIC, etc.)

Jon
That is not true. If she does get that kind of money from somewhere, it certainly isn't getting it back, she didn't pay anywhere close to that amount in taxes in the first place.

well she will get probably 4 or 5000's she got kid and whenever u file with ur kid u'll get a lot. It's funny how they work their system

Elle
I know this sounds wrong but it's sooooo true! She is probably on welfare too. I have a couple of "friends" who work just enough to file taxes then quit or get fired. They get back w/ two kids around $5,000.00. More than they ever thought about putting in! It makes me sick. In the meantime I work all year and have to pay State (KY) every year! This is a fact, I have known both girls since middle school and every year this time I end up remembering how different we are, it's sooo not fair. I have had to borrow money from a welfare chick last year to pay my state taxes!

FireChick
Thats B.S. I don't think even surgeons get that much back. She'll be lucky if she gets 10 dollars.
