If you start a job before 25 May without a P45, the employer has the authority to put you on code 543L cumulative, provided you sign the P46 to say this is your only job.

Emergency coding probably single persons allowance. You should probably ask for a P46 to fill in.

You will be put onto Emergency Tax until you can get your P45 in to your new employee.
K8
You will have to pay emergency tax which is more than what you would normally pay.
Tango
Without a P45 or P46 you will be charged tax at basic rate (20%)
Ask you employer for a P46, depending on which statement you sign your employer will use the appropriate tax code

I started a new job last year and didn't submit my P45 till a few months later. Your 'emergency tax code' will usually mean less or equal tax as it will the standard 543L (2008/9) so I wouldn't worry. Check your P45 for the code in last year - it will be 522L in 07/08 if you have no benefits in kind or other adjustments. If it is it will make no difference.
The tax year has just started so it's unlikely you will see much fluctuation anyway as you get a new code each 6 April.

you will be put on emergency tax that's what happened to me. I got the money back that i paid extra in the end.
