No, it goes down as one of the worst ideas out of Washington in quite a while, from an administration noteworthy for bad ideas and muddled thinking.
It will double the Federal deficit for FY08. Bush won't be around to sort that out, not that he's any great shakes on economics anyway; look at the record debt now -- in the trillions. Most of it will be funded by borrowing money from foreign countries like China -- not exactly in our national interest! Then a fair chunk of it will be wasted on cheap Chinese-made geegaws. Scorecard at that point: China - 2, US - 0.
The whole thing is less than 1% of the GNP, hardly enough to help much with gas heading to $4 per gallon.
Finally, for most folks the $600 or so they'll get won't make much difference. If you're facing foreclosure it might hold things off for a month or two if you're lucky. |

No, but it's an election year and the politicians have to be seeing as doing something about the economy.
In an economy as large as the USA, the rebate will have very little impact. In the long run, it worsens the deficit and requires the government to borrow more and more money. |

You really think $600 is going to make a big difference? Most people will either pay of debt or put the money in the bank. That doesn't stimulate the economy. In fact it puts us further in debt that we, our children and many generation later will have to repay.
Then you have the Feds wasting all the money to mail out notices for something that has been all over the news and internet. What a waste of money. If Bush wasn't running again I would think it was just for political purposes. |

It's actually a very stupid thing and the only reason they think they have to do it is that the economy is in trouble.
Giving people free money for doing nothing simply enables bad behavior. |

Actually, I don't think much of the idea. If it really keeps us out of recession, great, but just printing money and sending it out has all sorts of downsides. |
