Oh man. I guess my family and I got ripped off because we've been paying taxes even before we became citizens....lol. My family were diplomats until my sister and I were old enough to apply for citizenship and no longer dependents of our parents.

I've never heard such thing but if they aren't paying any taxes they must be doing something illegal.

Where did you hear this? This is absolutely false.

That is an urban legend. Legal immigrants, as well as illegal immigrants, are subject to the same tax laws as everyone else. The tax laws of the U.S. applies based on your physical presence in the U.S., not your immigration status. Once you have been present long enough in the U.S. to meet the Physical Presence Test, you are subject to tax in the U.S. same as any other tax resident.

Common misconception and an urban legend.

Search on Snopes.com so see the truth.

That isn't correct. It's a falsehood that's spread around to try to rev people up against legal immigrants, but is definitely NOT true.

TaxGuru
I don't know how that idiotic rumor got started, but it is completely false.

Immigrants, legal or not, pay tax the same as anyone else. If they don't pay tax, it's because they don't make enough money to be taxable!

bostonianinmo
There is NO truth to that! Not sure where you heard it but now you know that you have a source of information that is NOT to be trusted!

Anyone who earns income in the US -- legal or otherwise -- is subject to US income tax laws.

I didnt know that!!! What a rediculous rule. If they are here they should be paying taxes from the day they start their first job. Maybe that is one of the reasons our streets are supposed to be lined with gold... Tax payers gold.
