Wow! What a load of USELESS information! Here's something MUCH closer to reality.
The year of your arrival you'll most likely be treated as a non-resident alien and pay higher taxes. It depends upon when during the tax year that you arrive -- earlier being better. Year 2 you'll generally be a dual-status alien and from year 3 onwards you'll be taxed as any other citizen or resident.
If you arrive as a Lawful Permanent Resident, you'll be treated as a citizen from day one. If you are making a substantial investment in the US, you can bypass the normal waiting lists and arrive as a Green Card holder fairly quickly. There's no set investment required, but something on the order of US $1,000,000 (£500,000) should usually work fine.
Any income is taxable unless excluded by law. Dividends and interest income are generally taxed as ordinary income.
Monies that you transfer to a US bank account are not taxed per-se, but certain reporting requirements may need to be met. The banks handle most of those automatically, however if the source is a foreign trust you may have additional reporting requirements as well, i.e. Form 3520. There's no tax on that, however the penalties for failure to report are staggeringly severe.
Here's a link to IRS Pub 519 which will tell you most of what you need to know: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p519.pdf
BTW, on the whole, you'll pay much LESS in tax in the US than you do in the UK. Petrol is still less than 50p per litre on this side of the pond and sales taxes (similar to VAT) are 10% or less, usually around 5% to 7% in most States. Property taxes are generally somewhat higher than UK Community Charge (old Rates) but are paid by the owner, not directly by tenants. Even so, the total tax burden is quite a bit lower. |

If you don't make money in the States and the only income you get is from your savings, then you will only be taxed from the interest you get from the bank. Also, you need to pay for property taxes, if you have a property and regular taxes when purchasing things. |

You pay a percent based on what you earn (wages, tips, dividends, etc.) and what deductions you have (ie. interest on your home loan, dependents, charitable contributions, etc.).
Never heard of a non-dom tax.
If the government has any sense at all foreigners would be paying more. IDK |

You will only have to pay capitol gains tax on any income generated from investments or interest. I believe there is a tax loophole where if your a foreigner that is opening a corporation then you are tax exempt for 3 years. This was implemented to attract foreign investors. If you incorporate as an investment firm and funnel all you personal investments through that corporation then you may be able to avoid taxes on capitol gains all together (talk to your family accountant). You will also have to pay property tax unless you rent. Keep in mind that the most expensive real estate in the country is on Manhattan. Flats in Trump's Tower go for $20-40 million. However, Manhattan is one of the only places left in the US where the housing prices are still on the rise.
NY is a rat race, you may want to consider places like Huntington Beach, CA (near L.A.). Very rich and not overcrowded. Housing prices have dropped drastically and you can live like a king for much less.
I can tell you this, I've been everywhere in this country and there is nothing that even compares to the Florida Key's. The only problem is the summers are unbearable because of the heat and humidity. Most rich people (like my parents) own two homes. They live on Ft. Meyers Beach Island in the winter and have a summer home on a lake here in Michigan. Lake St. Clair (near Detroit) is the party capitol of Michigan and believe me we know how to party here. There are party Islands like Gull Island that usually have over 3,000 boaters anchored on any weekend with topless girls every where. The night life here is also very crazy. There is an endless number of night clubs packed with fresh meat. You are close to Chicago (4 hour drive). and NY. |

Why do you not have a tax expert sort this out.
What about banking over the water and travel as a tourist to all the places you wish.
In this you can bank where you like
Put all your money in South Irish banks, or a little in HSBC international accounts. |

I think that if your not an American citizen you'll be charged more for taxes, but if you are an American citizen you'll probably pay less taxes |

Depends on what status you are going to be living in the US.
And if you have so much money, would you mind paying for my college? I have only a year left, but tuition went up double and plus I am a international, so have to pay out of state :(
I cannot afford it anymore and might have to go back home. |

You are either a tourist or you are a legal resident, if you can get the right visa then you pay income taxes on everything like everyone else. |
