chinaco32 | Little Tax Advice???? |
I paid H&R Block to do my taxes for 2004, and now the IRS says I owe them $1,144 from 2004.
Anything I should know before I get on the phone and start resolving this problem???
Thank you for your help,

H&R Block is supposed to stand beside you through all of this. Call the manager of the office you went to, get an appointment, and take her whatever she wants - it will probably be the 2004 return plus supporting documentation. And, HRB advertises that they will do this and go with you to the IRS without additional charge to you.
Good luck with your audit |

The IRS makes mistakes too, so don't assume that the amount they say you owe is correct. I too made a couple errors (one in my favor, one the other way) on my 1994 return, and received a CP2000 notice a couple months back listing both errors, and saying that I owed several hundred dollars. I recalculated my taxes correcting both errors, and it came up that I was actually owed money. I sent back a letter showing this, and received a notice today that I will get a refund check. |

I've been with H&R block for 10yrs, and it sounds like something put on you tax return was disallowed by the irs. Now that could be income, Kids, or filing head of household with no proof of residents. Yes, i agree, take the letter back to block and they will explain it. |

If your accountant made a mistake they should pay all penalties and interest.
You owe the full amount to the IRS but HR Block owes you the interest and penalties. |

H & R Block will not be liable for any money you owe, even if THEY made the mistakes. Check your receipt, I will bet you find that on there somewhere.
Before you call the IRS, you need to read and understand the letter they sent you. Personally, I wouldn't call the IRS. You can get conflicting information from their agents and nothing they tell you on the phone has to be adhered to. It is virtually a waste of time.
Do you think the IRS has a legitimate reason for asking for this money? Have you pulled your tax return and seen what the IRS notice is referring to? If you do not feel it's legitimate, just a mistake, you can try to state your reasons and send a letter to the address referenced in the notice. But know that the IRS squashes people like you everyday.
For $1200, it might be worth finding a Tax Attorney, look in your phone book and call to see if you can get a free consultation, then take the IRS notice(s) and your taxes to the meeting.
Just keep in mind that if you do call, write day the day-time- and name (ask the agent to spell if for you and get their representative number). If you send a letter, send it certified and keep copies of all correspondence.
Do yourself a huge favor and do not let this wait, the IRS is not the agency you want hunting you. |

Take the notice of money owed to the H&R Block office that did your taxes for 2004, and see if they can figure out why the IRS thinks you owe money. |

Call the IRS ( if you have not all ready ) they can tell you anything you need to know. Get your packet that H&R gave you, if you payed the $20.0 fee to H&R for insurance, meaning if H&R f*** up, it will be taken care of by them. |

Go back the the H&R Block office first and see if they can help. Do you know if you paid the extra for the protection (meaning they pay if they messed up your return)? If so I believe they have to handle it. The notice should also explain why they are assessing you the 1,144.
Good luck! |

The first lesson is to never, ever, ever use a tax return preparation service like that unless you have the most basic of returns.
Tax returns should only be prepared by people who are thoroughly educated, trained, and have years of experience.
Not by some housefrau who is looking to make some pin money. |
