beachlvr96 | Made a mistake when filing my taxes online...had a nightmare I was going to jail? |
I am embarrassed to ask...because I feel like the biggest idiot / nerd. I did my taxes recently thru an online service. I had both my 2006 an 2007 W2's (as I recall from last year I needed it) The Readers Digest version I entered all of 2006 info...instead of 2007. I swear I can here you all laughing, thinking yep that is stoopid.
My questions
1) Why didn't the IRS catch the mistake, instead of accepting it?
2) What should I do to correct?
3) Will the FBI, IRS, or some other scary 3 letters word come pounding on my door? |

I don't know for sure...but I would say you probably need to re-file and fix the mistake. I think it would be better for YOU to let them know what happened now, rather than them find out on their own in a few years. That might look like you were hiding things...if you tell them now, it looks like it was just a mistake. |

The reason I.R.S. accepted is because they don't yet have all the info loaded from your W'2s. You will need to file an ammended return. No one will come knocking. I would call the I.R.S. help # & have them walk you through the steps. I am not positive you can file amended returns on line. Matter of fact I would call the I.R.S. help # twice, to make sure you get the same answer!! |

An honest mistake will not land you in jail. Call the IRS and tell them what you di, they're there to assist on this sort of thing and they're really nice. You will have to pay whatever you owe plus, perhaps some back interest, but if that's difficult for you to pay immediately tell them that too, they'll probably give you time. Don't be embarassed. Everyone makes mistakes, and the IRS will appreciate that you caught your error yourself and came forward to fix it. Good luck! |

They'll catch your mistake in time. They don't look at your stuff right away. They have an entire country full of filers to look through. When They do see it you'll get a letter first telling you what your mistake was. You may want to go to a tax professional and ask for some assistance to see if you can clear up the mistake. |

Call the local IRS office and talk to them. They are not all out to get you. They are there to help. You would be better off informing them about it, rather than just letting it go further and further down the line. |

You need to file what's called an "amended tax return" for the proper year. The IRS can't check ALL tax returns. And unless you let it go, I highly doubt anyone will come pounding on your door.
The worst that can happen is that you will get audited and then get hit with a few hundred in fines and fees.
Just re-file and see what happens... |

If you filed online, all IRS has to work with is what you input. Garbage In-Garbage Out. Redoing the return on paper as an amendment should clear things up and eliminate nightmares. |

The IRS look more favorably on you if you let them know you made the error, versus waiting for them to find it.
Contact a tax attorney or tax adviser, they will advise you how to correct your mistake and file an amended return. |

There are some pretty good answers here, and some guesses that aren't quite so good.
I have a BS in accounting (but not a CPA). I have filed many returns, but absolutely no returns have I filed online, so this is to the best of my knowledge.
No worry. File a 1040X, which is an ammended return. You will have one of two possibilities (a) you will owe the IRS some money (b) the IRS will owe you some money. If you owe the IRS, include a check with your ammended return.
Your questions in order:
1) The IRS receives the W-2 information from the Social Security Administration, which can take several months. Employers do not have to file YOUR information with SSA until the end of Febuary, and later if electronic. The IRS has no way of knowing at this time (Jan '08) if the information you submitted is correct.
(I file the W-2's for my company, and I do it on paper)
2) File the 1040X as mentioned. This is fairly simple, comparable to the the 1040. I suggest doing this asap.
3)Nope. At least not for years. They'll send you letters first if your information doesn't match what your employer eventually files, trying to figure out what happened. You'll have plenty of time to get this fixed. |
