Marriage and Taxes?
If two people get married and one person owes back taxes, can they garnish the wages of the spouse also?
If you file a joint return then yes they will take your money too. You should file separate until the tax issue is resolved. As far as garnishing your check for your spouses back taxes, no they can not.

They WILL NOT garnish the wages of a spouse for back taxes but what they will do is if you have a refund coming at tax filing, if the SPOUSE has a refund due (if filing married, joint), they can use all or part of this to pay for the back taxes.

No, they cannot garnish the wages of the innocent spouse. Don't forget to either file separately or use the 8857... You can get more information from IRS pub 971 at irs.gov

no,the debt was accured prior to the marriage-so it should continue only to come from his checks-but please be careful-let him finish paying past due bills before you risk your credit by combining

They can't garnish your wages i don't believe ,but they can your tax refund. so u might want to look into filing injured spouse form with your taxes.Talk to your tax advisor. How long have u been married and what state u live in could also b a factor.

When you get married, you will have common assets and the IRS is first on the list of creditors. I don't believe they can garnish the wages of the spouse, but they can go after common assets (like put a lien on a house). You are marrying into debt, and need to come to terms with the fact that that debt will need to be paid because you cannot avoid paying the IRS
