vp | Married in May- How to file taxes? |
We were married in May, so I know that we have to file as married. He never changed his W-4 form to reflect married, is that okay? Also i have had 2 jobs this past year- one with my maiden name, and one with my married name. Does it matter if one of my tax forms has my maiden name on it?
Also, his income is a lot less than mine, should we file jointly or separately? |

None of it matters (the SSN stays the same). File jointly - you generally always benefit vs. filing separately. |

I always file jointly.
It doesn't matter that he didn't update his W-4 to married. That is only for his witholding status. It doesn't matter what your name is on your forms, as long as it was your legal name at (or nearly so) the time you were employed there. |

Filing jointly is the best. If you file married filing separately, you fall into a higher tax bracket kind of like being penalized. If you have oustanding liens such as student loans, the government may try to keep your refund then you file jointly with an injured spouse. Also, make sure the tax return has the same name as your (new) Social Security card. Or, rejected. Also, the w-4 is fine and you may get a much bigger refund if claimed 0-single on the w-4. |

Ok, married filing jointly, him not changing his W-4 withholding to up the amount of dependents is better, as you'll get more back, the W-2 will be ok, as the social security number now matches your married name, and lastly you need to file married filing jointly as I said about the first part of your question : ) |

just file jointly and don't worry about any of the things you mention. not a problem. |

The W-4 is fine. I think you'll get a bigger refund because he didn't claim any withholdings. The name on the tax form probably doesn't matter because they can go by Social Security number. I would file jointly as married. |

Jointly usually is the best way to go in terms of saving on taxes. |

rule of thumb is:
if you have been married 6 months or more at the time you are filing, then you file "married"
if it is less than 6 months you can still file "singel" but are still allowed to file as "married" if you wish to |
