B C | Medical tax deduction for hot tub? |
My husband has rheumatoid arthritis and we were looking at hot tubs
for him to relieve the pain and aid with circulation. The salesperson
told us we could get a medical deduction credit on our income tax.
Has anyone heard of this and if so, what is involved and what kind of
documentation do we need? She thought you would need a prescription from the doctor. Do I need to contact the IRS? Thanks for
your help. |

You might want to download IRS Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses, at irs.gov and read it.
It's possilble that it could be a deduction, but very unlikely. First of all, it would have to be PRESCRIBED by a doctor as NECESSARY, not just helpful, for his condition. Then if it is used by anyone else, would probably not fly. You'd have to subtract from the deduction any increase in the value of your home. The rest MIGHT be allowed as a deduction. Then IF your total medical expenses including whatever deduction you might be allowed for the hot tub is over 7.5% of your adjusted gross income, you could deduct the amount of med expenses that was over that limit, IF you itemize. Then the tax savings would be at most the extra deduction times your tax bracket.
That's an awful lot of "ifs", for a potential tax savings of a couple hundred dollars.
If it's likely to really help him, then by all means buy one if you can afford it. But don't figure it'll be a tax deduction. |

1) You would need a letter from the Doctor advising you to buy one.
2) The deduction is limited to the amount you spent less the increase in value of the home after you install it. For example, if you spend $10,000 on a hot tub but your house increases in value by $6,000 because of it, you can only deduct the difference of $4,000. You would need to contact a realtor and ask about the value before and after.
3) It would be a medical expense subject to the medical expense limitation. Medical expenses are deductible to the extent that they exceed 7.5% of your income.
4) Medical expenses are deductible only if you itemize.
5) Taking tax advice from a sales person is very dangerous. You wouldn't believe the stuff I have heard over the years.
So....is the hot tub deductible?......Maybe. |

I doubt that this would work out for you. Even if it were allowed you would probably have to set it up on a depreciation schedule. Suppose it cost $20,000 and would last 20 years. You could only deduct $1,000 per year. And in order to deduct it you would have to use the Itemized method of deductions instead of the Standard Deduction. As the Standard method is pretty high you would have to have a lot of other itemized deductions in order for it to be advantageous. You would probably also have to keep detailed records of when you used it, who used it, etc. If someone else in the family used it that would probably disqualify it as a medical deduction for your husband.
So, my guess would be that you would not benefit from deducting this on your taxes. But, if your husband needs it, go ahead and get it, and everybody else in the family can use it, too.
One more thing . . if you deducted it, you might be opening yourself up for an IRS audit. And they would go back 3 years and audit you for the last 3 yrs. and, you would possibly end up owing a lot of back taxes if they found errors.
The sales person was just trying to make a sale so he could get a nice commission. |

Lots of paperwork and the doctor has to order it, even then, the doctor has to prove it is medically necessary. |
