It depends on your age.

If you are under the age of 20 then a minimum wage of no less then $4.25 must be paid or their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment with any employer as long as their work does not displace other workers. After 90 consecutive days of employment, or when the worker reaches age 20 (whichever comes first), the worker must receive at least the federal minimum wage.

http://www.dol.gov/elaws/esa/flsa/docs/ymwplink.asp

The federal state minimum wage is currently $5.85 an hour.

In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to the higher of the two minimum wages.

For more information regarding state minimum wages visit the website below and click on the state.

Federal minimum wage is $5.85 per hour. If you are a full-time student, though, they are allowed to pay you 85% of that, or $4.97 an hour. And under some circumstances, if you're under 20, they can pay you $4.25 an hour for the first 90 days. So the $5 an hour might or might not be legal, depending on where you are, your age, and your student status.

Some states have a higher minimum wage than the federal, but if they don't, then the federal minimum applies. Some states have a lower minimum that the federal - in that case, you must get the federal minimum.

A number of responders give wrong amounts for minimum wage. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_minimum_wages and http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/q-a.htm#young

Minimum wage is a national amount, not local. Some industries don't have to pay minimum wage if the worker is receiving tips, etc

Are you related to the owner? This is legal, and a common family wage if you are.

Maine. $5.15 as of September 1, 2007. Yippie, who the hell can live on that?

All the wages are different depending on where you live. I live in CA where min wage is 7.50/hr.

Find your state at this site and it'll let you know what they are required to pay you. http://www.dol.gov/esa/minwage/america.htm

Every where is different. For example, in Kansas they only have to pay you 2.65 /hr. Louisiana has no minimum wage...

Oops your account has been suspe
in MI it was 5.15 for a long time, it went up to 7.25 last year. Its still hard to find full time work though, so it isn't much help.
