Minor Federal Tax?
I'm a minor and work as the front desk manager at a doctors office and make about 500 bucks a week.

I'm on an automatic payroll service and they deduct federal taxes from my check. Will I get this back?

My parents claim me as a dependent and I won't be 18 for over a year still.

Is there any way I can be exempt from federal tax? I'm so confused about refunds etc any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How long have you had this job? Did you have it in 2007? If so, you should have received a W2 from your employer documenting your wages and tax withholdings. If you have not received this form or have misplaced it, contact your employer to get a replacement. You need to file a federal income tax return for 2007 on these wages to either pay what you owe or get a refund back for your overpayment.

You might or might not get SOME of what's withheld for federal tax back, but won't get all of it back. If you claimed single, zero allowances on your W-4 form, you should be OK and not owe anything - if you claimed one allowance or more, you will not get a refund and will probably owe something. And no, there's no way for you to be exempt from federal tax - welcome to the working world, but if you earn that kind of money, you pay tax on it - being a minor doesn't exempt you from that.

You can file, but you must say that your parents are claiming you on their tax return. You are definitely not exempt. The IRS website will have more detailed information.

To get a refund of any part of the federal tax that was withheld you will need to file a tax return.
However since your parents claim you on their return you can not claim yourself as a dependent on your own return. So do not claim yourself as an exemption.
You will be able to claim the Standard Deduction of $5,350 from your earnings and must pay tax on the income remaining after this and any other Credits or deductions are subtracted.

Sorry, you cannot exempt yourself from federal tax as long as you live and work within the borders of the United States. Your age has no bearing on weather or not your wages are taxed.

You pay in a certain amount of federal taxes and depending on your income, you may get some, all, or none of it back. It is possible you could even owe taxes. If you claimed 0 on your W2, you'll probably get a refund. If you claimed 1, it's up in the air. You are not exempt from federal taxes. You will have to file a tax return for your earnings despite your parents claiming you. Go to turbo tax or taxfreedom.com...you should be able to file for free.

You can't be exempt, you make too much. You would have to EXPECT that your income for 2008 would be less than $5450. If you are making $500 a week, you have passed that threshhold ALREADY this year.

Nope your not exempt honey, but file at taxslayer.com they don't charge for e-file if you qualify and it seems you do.

Yes, you MUST file a 1040. I'm sure you can use 1040EZ. If your parents claim you, then you can not claim yourself. Just work through the form, it's really easy for someone like you with just one job and no other sources of income.
Also, you must file an income tax this year, to get the $600 from the government.
