marketing101x | Moving out of the country to protect myself from the IRS? |
I love my country and I dont mind paying my taxes. But I do owe a lot of back taxes and I am having a hard time catching up.
I have nightmares about the IRS freezing my bank account. If they did this I would not be able to make any income and my business would shut down.
They are asking me to pay very high monthly notes which is cutting into my budget and making a very high strain on me and my family.
I need a bank account with lots of money in it in order to operate my business.
So Im thinking about moving out of the country for a while and operating my online business from there for about a year.
This way I could get back on my feet and pay the IRS what I CAN WHEN I can and then move back when im able to pay it all off.
Could I pull this off? Or can the IRS gain access to my money if Im in another country?
As long as im paying them SOMETHING every month this isnt tax evasion right?

Call Ronnie Deutch! (That's really meant as a joke, but it might not hurt).
There are some fabulous answers on here already!!! Mine is a joke but after thinking about it, with a free first consultation, it might not hurt to talk to a tax attorney or a tax professional in the office of a tax attorney.
If you leave the country they can bring up Felony charges and might even be able to seize your assets in that country provided you are able to legally transfer them offshore under the radar of the IRS.
You may get 10-20 years of federal prison time. ...and that's hard time. The Federal Prison System has plenty of money to pay for your incarceration and doesn't give time off for good behavior just because they lack funding to pay for you. On the flipside rapes are not as common in Federal prisons as they are in state prisons. Why? State prisons are underfunded, understaffed, and overpopulated. ...it happens, but is not as common.
Good luck and I hope you come to a solution that works well for all parties involved and keeps you from getting raped in prison. |

You need to address your problem is a less dramatic fashion. IRS had standards it has to operate by. If you are running a business you need to analyze your operation to see how you can make your peg fit the IRS hole.

Your tax's fines and fees will continue to accrue no matter where you are, so your location would be irrelevant as long as you intend to return. You and your wife would have to remain in a country that does not extradite. The IRS is persistent and perpetual as they will hold a spouse or an estate liable... they are not even thwarted by death!
As you know, declaring bankruptcy will not solve the IRS problem, but it may rid you of other commitments that could help you to repay your IRS debt easier. Do not make that decision under duress and do not take its own repercussions lightly. This affects your wife also, so it should be a joint decision.
Taking a minimalist approach for a few years may be your only recourse... lower your standard of living a notch or two and live within that budget appropriately. It is not a judgment call, but unless you are in abject poverty there are always costs you can cut, things you may want but don't really need.
Sell what you can sell; cut waste; recycle/reuse; explain a tight budget to the kids as best they can understand; consider second/third incomes or putting your business on the back burner for a better paying job; count your pennies and account for every penny spent... none of these concepts should be new to you.
Sorry, there is no good news for dealings with the IRS and being in arrears. |

You might be able to do that. And unless you owe huge amounts, they wouldn't be likely to try to collect from you from ot of the US.
It isn't tax evasion if you have reported your income, taxes are properly assessed, but you are just late paying. It's not a good thing to do, and can still get you in trouble, but it isn't tax evasion. |

No, because then you'd be a fugitive. |

Are your IRS problems income tax related or payroll tax related? Big difference on payment requirements. |

I DO NOT suggest leaving the country. The IRS will nag at you to pay them something, but for the situation your in, I would pay them whatever you can to keep yourself on track, but DO NOT AVOID PAYMENTS or you IRS nightmares will come true. If your credit isnt bad, try getting a small loan to keep you stable, while still paying what you owe.
Best of Luck! |

If Barak Obama wins the election you can just ask the government to bail you out like they did Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae...two government institutions that have screwed this country financially for decades to come.
OR...you could call a tax lawyer to sort the whole thing out. The IRS will usually settle for a reduced amount. If this country adopted a FairTax (www.fairtax.org) you wouldn't even be in this situation...no matter how bad your accounting is.

Move to Canada! You can ask for political asylum. Not paying your taxes is not a criminal offense in Canada. Matter of fact, you can Bankrupt them. If you told immigration that the U.S might put you in jail for not paying your taxes, theres a good chance the Canadian government will welcome you with open arms. NO JOKE!! GOOD LUCK! Oh ya, Vancouver is beautiful !!!!!! |
