There are several issues here. Firstly, we need to know how your daughter earned her money. If it was from babysitting (or any other work that she did not get a W-2 for she MUST file, complete Schedule C and Schedule SE and pay a little bit of SE tax (about $73).
If she got a W-2 for the $480 she should, as others have noted, look at box 2 of the W-2. That will tell her the amount of her federal refund. She sshould consider efiling if she is due anything back. Goi ti www.irs.gov, click on the efile link on the left hand side and follow the links to find a free provider. If she cannot get it completely free (and all she has is a W-2) go to www.irs.gov and download form 1040EZ, and have her fill it in (you can do it on screen if you have Adobe Reader) print it out and mail it. Most states have efile or telephone filing so visit your state's department of revenue website if she is due any state refund (look at the bottom of the W-2 for the amount).
As to whether you can claim her as a dependent, that has a lot to do with your, and her, financial situations. The best I can do is this link. Just work through the flowcharts. If she is a qualifying child and you meet all the conditions, stop there - no need to see if she is a qualifying relative.
My gut feeling is that she is your dependent, unless you are divorced or legally separated from her father. See the link below for the full details |

You can claim her if you're otherwise eligible to - the $480 she made doesn't change that.
She doesn't have to file a federal return, but if anything was withheld for federal income taxes, she should file to get it refunded.
Depending on where you live, she might have to file a state and/or local return. |

She is still your dependent. She only needs to file if money was withheld in order to get a refund. There is no tax due on that amount so all money withheld (other than SS and Med) will be refunded. |

She does not need to file / You can claim her as a dependant. |

she should file as she will get any fed. taxes returned to her. just make sure that she checks the box stating that she can be claimed on someone else's taxes, and you can still take the deduction on your taxes. |

No one has to file taxes if they earned less than 5000 dollars in a year....your daughter's 480 doesn't make a difference...and you can still claim her as a dependent on your return...there is a section that asks if your child had any income....you can list it there, but even if you don't, it's not gonna matter. |

Whatever you do make sure she does NOT FILE! My suggestion, have her work up her taxes and NOT FILE, just see how much she would get back. (If she had taxes taken out) Then have her let you claim her and give her the money that she would have gotten back, that way you both win!! Hope this helps!! |
