My baby will be born on 11/29/2008. Can I claim him as a dependent for year 2008? Do I need to get him a SSN?

As long as your child is born before new years eve of 2008 he/she will be considered a dependent and yes you will need to obtain a social security #

Congratulations!

Yes, he will need an SSN. You can obtain one for him after he is born by completing an SS Form 5, available on http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

The answer to both questions is yes. You can't apply for the SSN until after the birth.

Daniel
Leaving aside how you know the exact date your baby will be born...the answer is yes. If a child is born on any date in 2008, including 12/31/2008 at 11:59 pm, he can be claimed as a dependent on your tax return. You will need to get him a SSN because this number is required in the listing of dependents.

travelinman2038
Yes you can and for the full amount. Yes, get him/her a SSN as soon as you can.

wrf3k
yes you can claim the baby in the year it was born. if it was born on 12-31-08 at 11:59 pm you can still claim it. and yes you will need a ssi number.

naelynn20
Yes you can... But you will need a social security number before you can claim him... It is not hard at all to get the baby a social security number

Yes you can claim him as a dependant, however you do need to get him assigned a SSN. This website should help you.

Yes, you can claim him on your 2008 taxes. Yes, you will also have to get a SSN for him before you can claim him. The social security number is what the IRS bases the child tax credit on. If you fill out all of the necessary paperwork on time and send it out shortly after you get it you will be fine and have the SS card in time.

Good Luck with your little one when he comes!

Yes, as long as your baby is born in 2008, it doesn't matter the day. A child born in the early part of the year is no different than one born on December 31st as far as tax law goes.
You will need to register him for a SSN sooner than later. It doesn't have to be filed within the same year he's born, but there' no need not to. It's a very simple form and will likely be given to you at the hospital. (if you are doing a homebirth, by chance, then you can call the SS office in your state to request the form.)
Best wishes!

Yes and Yes. though I believe there was some exception regarding the SS# if I remember correctly.

acdc_jams1975
Yes you can claim him, but you will have to get his social security number ordered before the end of december 08. Normally these papers are filled out in the hospital before you go home.

taper_jean
you need to get him a ssn first

Judy1
Yes you can claim him2008 for as long as he's born in 2008. You'll need a ss#, but those get applied for in the hospital, and you should have it by the time you file.

get him a name first... i know you probably might already got him a name... my point is, have fun living the moment... and yes, get him registered as a dependent when he's here...

Congrats!

Yes, you will be going to Social Security Administration with the papers they gave you at the hospital and request him/her a number ( don't take any crap from them either ) then comes end of January you will file your taxes with any W-2 and claim the baby under yourself or husband as head of household and just wait for the check.

If the baby lives with you for the entire portion of 2008 that it is alive (in other words, from its birth to either 12/31/08 or its death, whichever occurs first), excluding temporary absences (such as overnight hospital stays), then it is considered to have lived with you for all of 2008 and can be claimed as a dependent if all other requirements (relationship, support, etc.) are met.

If the baby is born in the U.S. or is a U.S. citizen, then an SSN is needed to claim it. If it is born in a foreign country and is not a U.S. citizen, then it may not qualify for an SSN, but can be claimed if you get it an ITIN (which is not available if it is born in the U.S. or is a U.S. citizen).

How do you know the exact birth date ahead of time?
