Only one of you can claim HOH, usually the person with the higher income qualifies as HOH
Generally, you may claim head of household filing status on your tax return only if you are unmarried and pay more than 50% of the costs of keeping up a home for yourself and your dependent(s) or other qualifying individuals. |

You should figure your taxes both ways and file whatever way works out best for you. |

on would think that:
-- whoever makes more money pays the larger share of expenses.
-- whoever has the highest income should get the most deductions, to save more on taxes, to help pay those expenses.
one wonders how some people think. "hey, we're working together. so you pay $1000 so i can get $10 back." not sure whether that's a statement about math, greed, cooperation, or what.
head of household requires a dependent.
and you'll get caught if you both claim the same dependent.
what i wonder is, why is someone giving bad flags to everyone who says the higher earner should claim HOH? what's the logic? i'd really like to understand the reasoning. |
