Bad, Bad year to get an xbox 360 pro while waiting for a tax refund.
Most of the prior answers are way off base, this tax return filing season is going to be different than any prior history.
Because of the issue related to Alternative Minimum Tax and Congress not coming up with a fix, the IRS has announced that the first day they will accept returns will be delayed. The length of the delay can not yet be established, but their guess is either February 18th or first of March. This goes for e-file and paper returns. And considering the fact so many people will be filing at the same time, don't expect a refund until the end of March for e-file and the middle of April for paper returns.

osuguy2
lol you're gonna be waiting for awhile. the fiscal year ends on dec 31, so he won't even get his w2s until sometime in January, if he files right away electronically he might have a return by early to mid february at the very earliest. Prob more like march.

amnesty sucks
tax info must be MAILED to the taxpayer by January 31. Based on experience, it is NOT a good idea to file unless you are absolutely certain that all info has been received.

We have had to amend numerous returns for clients that had additional documents come in and they had already filed their return. And, if you think the IRS will say "that's OK, you don't need to report this additional income" you are mistaken.

The refund pmt will depend on when the return is filed and if there are tons of people filing at the same time. For example, a return filed on April 15th might have a longer wait for a refund than if the return is filed in late February.

E-file tends to be faster. NEVER get a loan regarding your refund. The interest rate you are charged on YOUR money is extremely high!

It depends on when he files his tax return. The earliest would be early February which means that he should receive his refund (assuming that he is getting one) by the end of February to early March. The latest (assuming that he is getting a refund) would be April 15, 2011. Since the return was filed so late, the refund check should arrive by June 1, 2011.

Since it appears to me that you are "expecting" the xbox, if it was me, I would make you wait until 2011. I would still be keeping my promise. LOL!!!

probably Feb-April time frame

Crypt
Depends on when he files and how he's getting the return. But the taxes have to be submitted by April 14th if I recall correctly, and probably get his return a few weeks after that.

As noted by several other people, he can file sooner than that, and get the return sooner than that. Of course he may also file for an extension. Depends on his own finances.

KD
Best case- if his employers and banks get him everything immediately, he can file by the end of January and have it in early Feb (turn around on refund is very quick at that time- about 7-9 days. I do it every year for that very reason). Worst case? You dad puts it off until April 15 like some many other idiots and refund may take up to a month, depending on how he files and how many people wait until then to file.

depends on when he files but worst case he will have the money by july 1st if he files april 15. He can file way before that if he wants to

J'adore
Middle of Feb at the very soonest... and that's with rapid refund.... regular maybe end of march early april....

i do rapid refund and have it back in like 2-3 weeks... it costs like a few hundred dollars to have it rapid refunded.... depending on where you go.
