My daughter is 21 and receives social security benefits every month. Do we have to pay income taxes on this?
She receives benefits because she is disabled.

your daughter is how old? oh, 21. she receives these benefits. do you receive them? if you do not receive them and she does then who gets the money? hmm - she gets the money and since receiving money is considered receiving an income, and one pays taxes on the income that THEY receive, and you don't receive any of this money that your daughter receives, unless you charge her rent. so unless you charge her rent, then you don't receive any of this income, so you don't pay any income tax on the money she receives. but if you do charge her rent, then that is considered income to you and as such taxes must be filed for this income.

but as for her disability checks, they are hers alone. so she has to file for her tax refund herself. best to consult a tax preparer such as H + R Block. they are the pros.

Look at the SSA-1099. Whose name is on it? Hers? Then it's her income and if her income is solely from this, it's not taxable.

boi
nope, not at all, if you have federal wit holding on it you will get a refund back, but hey she is qualify for the tax rebate. If no one can claim her she must file to get the tax rebate. Do it for free at liberty tax. find one in your local area.

If your daughter made over $3400 in ssi you cannot claim her as a dependant unless she is also a full time student. She does not have to file income tax if the ssi is her only income but she should this year because there is a possibility she will receive the $300 rebate if she files. She will not owe any taxes if this is her only income.

No you don't have to pay taxes on this. However, like the one person had said, she will need to file in order to get the rebate check.

Check with your local library to see if you have free tax help in your area. I would doubt anyone who is not a pro, and most pros will not do this sort of answer over the phone.

If you make more than like 25,000 a yr I think you do.

Depending upon the amount(no scratch that! cause I don't!) but give someone at your local IRS office a call and ask them!

I don't know for sure; but if that's her only means of support, and she pays you for room and board, and you don't claim her as a dependent on your income tax return, you shouldn't.

But if you do, then that's something else again; best course of action, consult a neighborhood advocate for low income family's: that is, if you are a low income family.
