From the IRS Website:
You must file a return (for single dependents) if any of the following apply.
• Your unearned income was more than $850.
• Your earned income was more than $5,150.
• Your gross income was more than the larger of:
• $850, or
• Your earned income (up to $4,850) plus $300. |

If she earned more than $5,150 in 2006, she needs to file a return. If she made less, but her employer withheld federal income tax, she should still file to get a refund of the amount withheld. |

My son is 17 years old and he also is in high school and working part time. He did not make very much last year, but he filed a 1040EZ just so that he could get back the federal taxes he paid. He is getting a refund, even though it is pretty small, but it's worth it to file a return just to be able to do that---even if you don't necessarily have to because of the income requirements. |

It depends upon her income. If she had wages of $5,150 or more, or if she had self employment income of $400 or more, or unearned income of $850 or more, she must file a return.
If she earned less but had taxes withheld from her wages, she'll need to file to get a refund of the taxes withheld. |

If you can claim her as a dependent, and all of her income was from her job and is shown on a W-2, then she wouldn't have to file unless she made over $5150. But if she made less than that but had anything withheld for federal income taxes, she should file to get her money refunded. She could file a 1040EZ, and should check the YOU box on line 5 that says she can be claimed as a dependent. |

I'm not sure about the second part of your question but yes she needs to file and if you need to file then you could file jointly and you the head of the household and claim her as a dependent CHA CHA CHING! |

If she received a W2 or 1099 statement from her employer, she needs to file a 1040...probably a 1040EZ. |

if income was made then taxes should be filed. |

Well your daughter should file taxes if she earns 3300 or more however, to teacher that this is important and that filing taxes can be beneficial to her. Here is what you do... I would guess that she lives with you so, she would only get the standard deduction for a single person and should get back whatever taxes she overpaid after the standard deductionis subtracted from her income then you can not claim her as an exeption but you CAN still claim her for your earned income credit, if she lives with you .
I do taxes and many young people file taxes and get money back, so with you still being able to get the earned income credit for her.
The form she should use is 1040EZ
Good Luck! |
