My first name is spelled wrong on my tax refund check; will I still be able to get it cashed?

If it's a simple mis-spelling you should be OK, especially at your own bank. If your name was Rose and it was made out to Edward, that would be an issue.

marti
If you do all your banking at the same place I'm sure they'd cash it. You really need to inform IRS of the mistake tho.

Yes! Sign the check with the incorrect spelling of your name, and underneath the correct spelling of your name. I would contact the IRS however, and see what they can do to correct their error.

Don't cash the check until you've spoken to the IRS. While you could cash the check and get the money, the more important thing in the long run is that the IRS have your name correctly recorded.

I have a friend whose mother has a similar type situation. There was a little problem with her name that she just let go for years and years. When it came retirement time, it became a major issue that took about 18 months to resolve. (When she came to this country at age 8, the immigration officials spelled her name wrong. Sometimes she used their spelling on official documents, other times she used hers. The upshot was her records got jumbled.)

Call the IRS and find out if there is an issue. It will be easier to correct now than to wait and let it compound.

Good luck.

Yes, just endorse it the way it is spelled on the check, then rewrite it the riught way on the second line.If you have problems, just have it cashed at your bank where they know you as a customer..

There shouldn't be a problem as long as the spelling is pretty close - Jon / John, Lesley / Leslie, Katherine / Catherine etc.

If the bank don't accept it then arrange with the IRS to have another check sent.

I know your pain my name is constantly mispelled. If it is one or two letters than no it shouldn't be and issue, but if the name is completely murdered then I would call the IRS and ask them what to do.
Although I would talk to your bank cause if they know you or have your account they may be able to 1. verify it with the IRS 2. Deposist it anyway because they know you.

call the IRS and tell them that if they cant even spell your name right, then your relationship is over. If you have a personal bank they may not even notice that.
