She may qualify fir a Mortgage deduction if she itemizes her taxes. She will have to file a Form 1040 A to get that money. Short forms don't allow for that It might be to her advantage to check this out.
(She has to have taxable income and had taxes withheld or paid taxes to get anything back.) |

No tax refund UNLESS you have paid in...
the only way you can claim a person too, is if you had paid at least HALF of their welfare for the year..food, clothes, housing, meds, etc etc |

It sounds like she might owe taxes. You only get a refund if you have paid too much in taxes. |

You have to pay income taxes in order to file. No taxes=no return. |

If this is her ONLY source of income then she is not required to file a tax return. She had no earned income, paid no taxes, and had no federal tax liability. But thank God, she owns her home and she's not homeless. |

You only get back what you pay in. Now she could file.... keep track of the negative balance so that if sometime in the future she has a windfall she can use the negative balances to off set the taxes on the windfall. |

If she has children living at home or who are in college that she supports, she should file, so she can get the 'earned income credit' ... you can get this even if you didn't actually 'earn' any money in the year you are filing for. |
