You still owe the taxes up until the point that the bank took ownership of the property. You can make arrangements to pay. |

You got hit with forgiveness of debt? Did you see a CPA and check that your tax bill is really 20,000?
Anyway, to all who care, never let them foreclose on you. Be proactive and sell if you can't afford to pay. |

Pay it, wait for 5 years and hope they don't sue you (or whatever the statute of limitations is in your state), or file for bankruptcy. |

This seems strange to me. Usually when a home is foreclosed on and sold. The taxes are paid by the new owner and the bank gets the rest of the money and holds the note. We always see TV commericals saying you can buy this property for some crazy amount like $500.00, that is because the amount of the taxes due are $500.00, then the new owner takes out a mortgage for the amount the home appraises for. I would say look into what happen in the transaction. Was this tax bill for your property being re-assessed before the foreclosure. I would ask an accountant your questions once you figure out what has transpired. |

Assuming the 20,000 tax bill is for federal income taxes. File an Installment Agreement (Form 9465) with the IRS and set up some type of monthly payment plan. The IRS will work with you as long as you don't just do nothing. |
