WE WERE TOLD BY SOCIAL SECURITY WE DID NOT HAVE TO FILE BECAUSE OF OUR INCOME, ONLY FILE IF WE HAD AN EXTRA INCOME. WE DO PAY PROPERTY TAXES, GAS TAX, ETC. AND THERE IS NO EXTRA INCOME. DO WE GET A REBATE CHECK? |

Under the current proposal, no, but that could change. So far the rules for the rebate aren't settled.

If your ONLY income is Social Security income, then you will owe NO income taxes. You do not have to file.
On the rebate check it states:
People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple.
So it sounds like you don't get a check because you had no earned income.

You will not have to pay anything.. but you should still file and see if qualify for a refund. Check out the tax calculator on hrblock.com and see if it's worth your while. Good Luck. |

Although I'm not a subject matter expert, I believe you need to have filed an income tax return to qualify. You may ask someone at the Social Security office, or check the IRS website. |

Even though you're not required to file, if you file anyway you may qualify for credits or other refunds.
the IRS will not send you a refund unless you file - because they don't know the information unless you explicitely tell them. |
